Though it is only about 60 pages long, I think the book really hits on the important points in his life and give the readers a great overview about this great hockey player. This is a great book for a fan to read because it covers his professional life, but it also doesn't just stop there: his youth and private life are also revealed in this book. I really enjoyed this, and there is a lot of inspiration to take away from Sidney Crosby's story too.

Highly recommend By DIANE MILLER AWESOME book, highly recommend for any hockey fan, and even to the haters out there need to read this.5 stars

The narrator spoke too fast and continually mis-pronounced names of players. You would think a book about a hockey player the narrator would know how to say EVGENI.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring By JB Lazarte Writing an unauthorized autobiography of someone famous, especially a famous athlete, could be tricky. There is so much information and so many stories and anecdotes behind that person's life that it could be challenging about which information to include. But for author Bill Redbad, who shows exceptional skills in combing through the details, his book Hyun-Jin Ryu: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Hyun-Jin Ryu has turned out to be a great read.Succinct and well-packed with information that all Hyun-Jin Ryu fans will definitely appreciate, the book tells so many of what made Hyun-Jin Ryu a respected baseball player, including his family background and what we went through growing up.With this book and with how Redban weaved his words, this is inspiring not only to sports fans but to anyone who is pursuing something they love to do and would like to read a truly remarkable life. The book offers so much in just a few pages, and that is telling of the author's brevity and control. While Hyun-Jin Ryu: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Hyun-Jin Ryu is a quick read, the inspiration and the lessons that readers will draw from it will stay with them for a long time.

Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky (sometimes spelled Dostoevsky). It was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866. It was later published in a single volume. This is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from ten years of exile in Siberia. Crime and Punishment is the first great novel of his "mature" period of writing. Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who formulates and executes a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov argues that with the pawnbroker's money he can perform good deeds to counterbalance the crime, while ridding the world of a worthless vermin. He also commits this murder to test his own hypothesis that some people are naturally capable of such things, and even have the right to do them. Several times throughout the novel, Raskolnikov justifies his actions by connecting himself mentally with Napoleon Bonaparte, believing that murder is permissible in pursuit of a higher purpose…

Constance Clara Garnett (1861 - 1946) was an English translator of nineteenth-century Russian literature. Garnett was one of the first English translators of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov and introduced them on a wide basis to the English-speaking public. Constance Garnett translated 71 volumes of Russian literary works. Her translations received high acclaim from authors such as Joseph Conrad and D. H. Lawrence and are still being reprinted today.

Crime and Punishment (Unabridged Garnett Translation), by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Amazon.com Review Mired in poverty, the student Raskolnikov nevertheless thinks well of himself. Of his pawnbroker he takes a different view, and in deciding to do away with her he sets in motion his own tragic downfall. Dostoyevsky's penetrating novel of an intellectual whose moral compass goes haywire, and the detective who hunts him down for his terrible crime, is a stunning psychological portrait, a thriller and a profound meditation on guilt and retribution.

From Publishers Weekly Dostoyevski's classic novel of murder and guilt, featuring the conflicted killer Raskolnikov and his intellectually nimble antagonist Porfiry Petrovich, is read by the well-regarded Dick Hill. The combination should make for a must-listen audiobook, but the results are disappointingly plodding. Hill overemotes much of Dostoyevski's emotionally charged dialogue, rendering a delicate series of encounters as an array of outbursts and breakdowns. Listeners might find themselves wishing that Hill would restrain himself from the pitfalls of facile emotion in favor of a straight delivery of the inherent drama and descriptive splendor of the novel In a welcome technological twist, however, Tantor includes an e-book with this audiobook (as it does with most of its classic audiobooks), giving readers multiple options for how they might prefer to encounter Dostoyevski. (Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

From Booklist It might seem like an impossible task to cram such a heady work as Dostoevsky’s powerhouse crime novel into a graphic novel, but Mairowitz and Korkos have managed a fairly successful interpretation. They set the action in present-day Russia, which leads to some surprisingly clever allusions, but apart from that, they keep fairly close to the plot of the original, a strategy that creates some definite sticking points. Characters appear out of nowhere with little explanation of how they relate to the story, and certain minor and major details won’t make much sense to readers unfamiliar with the original. That said, the black-and-white artwork is a haunting expression of Raskolnikov’s severe inner turmoil; the stark angles, haunted visages, and heavy preponderance of black on the page captures psychological dread with an almost Hitchcockian flair. No one can expect this to match the depths of the original, but don’t think of it as a Cliffs Notes–esque alternative, either. Minor nudity, drug use, and blood splatters might make for a hard sell for classroom use. Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

However, we have a bit of misleading marketing going on here. Make sure you're buying the version you think you're buying before you order. "Crime and Punishment" published by General Books LLC is a poor quality scanned in version. If you do the "Look Inside" thing on this book, you'll see the inside of another version of the book, NOT the one you will receive. To give you a few quotes from the publishers website: "We created your book using OCR software ..... with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos.... After we re-typeset ... your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work .... we usually remove them. .... Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. ..... We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. .....". There's no manual editing whatsover. You get the general idea. Unfortunately, books published by General Books LLC are named, seemingly intentionally, so that they have reviews associated with much better quality imprints. General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Published (google them on Wikipedia), which is flooding Amazon with poor quality reprints and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with beter quality imprints associated with them.Seems like it's Caveat Emptor on Amazon these days as Amazon certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect it's customers from this Publisher.

When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett. This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle. It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

361 of 388 people found the following review helpful. A Classic for a Reason By Paul McGrath I initially approached this book with a great deal of trepidation. I had never read Dostoyevsky, and was concerned that I would get bogged down in some lengthy, mind-numbingly boring, nineteenth-century treatise on the bestial nature of man or something. I am happy to report this is not the case. Instead, and to my delight, it is a smoothly flowing and fascinating story of a young man who succumbs to the most base desire, and the impact this has both psychologically and otherwise on himself and those around him.To be sure, the book seems wordy in places, but I suspect this has to do with the translation. And what translator in his right mind would be bold enough to edit the great Dostoyevsky? But this is a very minor problem. What we get with Dostoyevsky is dramatic tension, detailed and believable human characters, and brilliant insight into human nature. Early in the novel our hero meets and has a lengthy conversation with Marmeladov, a drunkard. This conversation is never uninteresting and ultimately becomes pathetic and heartbreaking, but I kept wondering why so much time was spent on it. As I got deeper into the book, I understood why this conversation was so important, and realized that I was in the hands of a master storyteller. This is also indicative of the way in which the story reveals itself. Nothing is hurried. These people speak the way we actually speak to one another in real life, and more importantly, Dostoyevsky is able to flesh out his characters into whole, three-dimensional human beings. And what a diverse group of characters! Each is fleshed out, each is marvelously complex. Razujmikhin, the talkative, gregarious, good-hearted, insecure and destitute student; Sonia, the tragic child-prostitute, with a sense of rightness in the world; Petrovich, the self-important, self-made man, completely out of touch with his own humanity; Dunia, the honorable, wronged sister: we feel like we know these people because we've met people like them. They fit within our understanding of the way human beings are.Dostoyevsky also displays great insight into human nature. Svidrigailov, for example, talks of his wife as liking to be offended. "We all like to be offended," he says, "but she in particular loved to be offended." It suddenly struck me how true this is. It gives us a chance to act indignantly, to lash out at our enemies, to gain favor with our allies. I don't believe I've ever seen this thought expressed in literature before. In fact, it never occurred to me in real life!Petrovich, Dunia's suitor, not only expects to be loved, but because of his money, and her destitution, he expects to be adored! To be worshipped! He intentionally sought out a woman from whome he expected to get this, and is comletely flummoxed when she rejects him. His is an unusual character, but completely realized. There is so much more to talk about: the character of Raskolnikov, which is meticulously and carefully revealed; the sense of isolation which descends on him after committing his crime; the cat and mouse game played on him by the police detective. I could go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the historical and social context in which this takes place. Suffice to say this is a very rich book.Do not expect it to be a rip-roaring page turner. Sit down, relax, take your time, and savor it. It will be a very rewarding experience. And thank you SL, for recommending it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 4 Stars !! By Jennifer H. ~ Book B!tches Blog This is my first Rose Sawyer book and I enjoyed it quite a bit. What drew me to this book and author was the cover of the book and the blurb. I can't help but be sucked into a book that is about a MMA fighter.I thought this book was well written and I will for sure read other books by this author. Her writing style was good and one I could sink myself into. I found the characters and storyline interesting enough to hold my attention all the way through. The only thing I would've liked better, would've been getting more of their past story in real time. What I mean by that is that we learn about Noah and Caitlyn's background through snippets and flashbacks. I kind would've liked having that told in real time and then if need be have a 2 year time jump. I felt by writing this way we were missing some key facts of their friendship. With that said I still liked this book and I think that everyone should meet Noah James. He is definitely drool worthy ;)What I really enjoyed about this book was that it was different then the other MMA books out there. I can't explain what I mean, except that it just felt unique to me. Now don't get me wrong we had the normal aspects of a good MMA story, but the author added some elements of mystery and suspense to this story making it it's own.In this book we meet Caitlyn and Noah. Noah is a broken soul, who gets sucked into the darkness of his past and the only release he has from it is when he is fighting in the ring. That is until he meets Caitlyn. I will say we do learn a lot more about Noah's past then we did about Caitlyn's. Caitlyn's past is touched on, but I thought there could've been more about it in the book. I will warn you that this book is pretty much an insta-love scenario. Yes the characters have been friends for over 2 years but since we don't get that build up, it felt a little rushed to be exchanging I Love You's by 10% into the story. So if you aren't a fan of that, you might want to steer clear of this book. I personally still enjoyed the story and thought it was well worth the read!!If you are looking for a good MMA fighter love story then I think you should give this book a try. It is a stand alone and a complete story. Although I am hoping that maybe Ben would get his own book in the future ;)

Beautiful and Heartwarming By Deb ~ The Club I really enjoyed this new release by Rose Sawyer!Noah is automatically likable and without even knowing him or anything about him, I found myself in his corner! Noah's past is dark. But right at this very second in the opening of the book, his light is shining bright and at the end of that is the future he is looking to have with Caitlyn. When Noah is falsely accused of failing his drug test before his prize fight, the dark starts to set in for him again.Even though Noah has had a past that included drugs he has been clean for a very long time.He no longer believes in happiness and it seems as though every time things start to take a turn for the better, it get's snatched away from him.He knows he's being set up and he sets out to prove it.Noah is damaged, but Caitlyn see's the good in him, she is also as in love with him as he is her. Caitlyn has been hurt in the past and she has low self esteem due to that hurt but Noah makes her see that she is beautiful and worthy love.As the story continues Noah and Caitlyn build each other up and prove that no matter what life throws at them they can work it out as long as they do it together. This book was a wonderful and refreshing read. The epilogue for this book made me smile and had me grabbing the tissues! It was a beautiful HEA!***I was given this book as arc in exchange for an honest review***

The author, Bill Redban, follows the life of Madison Bumgarner from childhood to last year’s World Series win. While there are quite a few statistics, the author also ruminates on the legacy and potential of Madison Bumgarner and slightly delves into his personal life. This book would definitely appeal to San Francisco Giants fans as well as those who are fans of pitchers and their legacies.

This book is devoted to a whole series of useful firearms, beginning with the well-known .22 Long Rifle. The venerable “twenty-two” hosts a wide array of interesting loads, including some ultra-quiet choices and fairly nasty high-speed rounds. Even hotter rimfire calibers include the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, plus three small-bore derivatives: the .17 Mach II, .17 Hornady Rimfire Magnum, and Winchester’s high velocity .17 Super Magnum. Careful shopping can provide us with a useful rimfire (or maybe even two) with which to quietly harvest small game or eliminate pests. An economical .22 LR firearm can also serve as a great high-powered rifle trainer if similar function is considered. In a pinch, it might even work for self-defense. The rimfires can’t do everything, but they can do a lot once fully understood. One trait is easy to overlook until you start shooting. They’re lots of fun! This book will lead the way from beginning to end.
