Ice Like Fire (Snow Like Ashes Series), by Sara Raasch From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—This sequel picks up right where Snow Like Ashes (Harper, 2014) left off. Indeed, the novel makes no effort to refresh background from the first book. The world we are in (a map is included) is divided into provinces, which are categorized as Seasons or Rhythms. Meira, the protagonist, has been placed in an arranged marriage unifying her seasonal province, Winter, with a Rhythm province. Despite the romantic sparks between the couple in the previous volume, the embers here are neglected, as the two teens work against each other to recapture the magic in the kingdoms. The magic for each province is housed in a conduit (necklace, crown, etc.). If the item is destroyed, then the sovereign becomes the conduit. Meanwhile, there is additional untapped magic housed in secret chasms, which are tricky to find and trickier to open. Magic can be used for ill, like duping all the slaves in a province to think they are content. In the first installment, Meira is presented as a tough chakrum-master. In this entry, she struggles with trying to act like a proper sovereign. However, readers who hang in there will be treated to an epic showdown as the tough girl returns. This sequel is ambitious and assumes a great deal of background knowledge; even the characters are difficult to keep straight. That being said, hard-core fantasy fans will eat this up and clamor for the conclusion. By kindlemom1 (My Guilty Obsession) Fantasy has quickly become one of my favorite genres, something a year ago, I never would have imagined saying but, there you have it.When I read the first book in the series. Snow Like Ashes, I knew the author had come up with something original and fun and I couldn't wait for more. In fact, it was one of my favorite fantasy reads of the year and so Ice Like Fire was one of my most anticipated reads for 2015.This sequel crushed me. It tore me apart in some of the worst ways but also in some of the best.It played with my emotions, stomped on them, laughed at their sorrow and then slowly built them back up with kind words, pretty gestures, and lovely smiles, only to start the process all over again.To say I loved it, would be an understatement. This was everything I was hoping it would be.Lies, deceit. Betrayals. Promises. Friendships, secrets. Gah! So much happens and I sadly can't talk about any of it. Meira grows so much in this. I adore her. She makes mistakes, she isn't perfect but she does it all for her people, for those she loves and cares about. She is fierce and determined but still loving and kind and that is why she is the true heroine of the story. I am so proud of the person she has become and the person she has yet to be. I am in love with this series and after all that transpired, I need more. I crave more.It is going to be a very long few months until the next. Bruce I want to preface this review with a statement… Ice Like Fire is NOT Snow Like Ashes. I loved reading SLA, but honestly I didn't want to read another SLA. Ice Like Fire delivered what I wanted - something NEW!ILF packs a punch, combining the best of SLA with the excitement of the unexplored. Author Raasch has delivered truly an elevated story, and seeing the world through dual points of view makes it even more captivating as a reader.Ice Like Fire has shown Raasch to be the maturing author she is. With so many stories out there selling the same scenes in every book, I realize many readers might prefer glazing over the same explosive story, retold again and again, but not me. I grew up reading books that required commitment. For a story’s plot to evolve, it takes time, and some readers aren’t willing to do that. But for those of you who are, I guarantee ILF will not disappoint!With this sequel, Raasch has sculpted the world further, opening it up to all its inner workings, both political and cultural. Winter and Spring kingdoms, look out – you’re not alone anymore. I was glad to see Meira, Mather, and Theoron faced with new challenges in uncharted environments. While ILF may not pull you through countless bloody battles like SLA, what Raasch has built in ILF will leave you holding your breath and wanting more.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not As Good As The First By C.A. I really liked the first book of this series, but this follow up suffers from the second book slump. There were just too many holes in the story, some things were just " too" easy to be believable, and there were so many things that happened just to continue the story line and were unrealistic.Everyone is traumatized and spends the whole book thinking they can't do anything because of their past. The Queen Meira is supposed to be great with her chakram, except when she isn't, she's supposed to be self assured, excepts she isn't, she makes stupid mistakes, finds the keys she is looking for but can't hide them or keep them. They are plucked from her like candy from a baby. She can't make a decision to save her life. Is constantly getting pushed around, beaten up, manhandled. For having all this magic she is helpless and I don't see where it does any good at all. She can't figure anything out and is let around and bossed around by everybody, both good and evil.This book basically went nowhere.However, with all that going against it the book is well written. The author knows how to write and the book isn't boring and doesn't drag on. I have read books that didn't have the problems this book had but would bore you to tears or were poorly written.
