Walter Benjamin's sonnets, written to mourn his friend Fritz Heinle, constitute an important though little-known part of the philosopher's literary achievement and a unique contribution to the history of the German sonnet. Benjamin would add to their number over a decade, having begun his project soon after the outbreak of World War I and the suicide of his friend. They were among the writings that Benjamin, forced to flee France, entrusted to Georges Bataille in 1940 for safekeeping. Here, for the first time, readers of English are offered translations of all 73 "Heinle sonnets" along with the original German text and an extensive commentary. The Introductory Essay examines the poems' biographical context as well as Benjamin's bold approach to sonnet writing. These poems weave the deeply personal together with Benjamin's evolving religious and philosophical perspective--shedding new light on the emergence of the man and the thinker.

By Hobnails I obtained a copy of this book directly from the writing group at the English Library, La Souterraine. At first sight I was put off by the cover and its rather 'hackneyed' choice of subject matter, depicting of bread, cheese and wine as things French.I expected similar overworked and amateurish stories inside. Boy was I wrong! From the first page of the first story my attention was grabbed and held. There are twenty seven stories that are as rich, varied as are the nine authors contributing to this anthology. Four of whom are already published authors. Some clever editing has allowed the voice and style of each contributor to come through in the writing and not be suppressed under a 'uniform style guide.' This is essentially an amateur effort, but it is in no way amateurish in content and would stand favourably against any similar work released by any of the major publishing houses. That goes for the layout and typesetting of the book making a compact read that is easy on the eye as one flows through the pages. This anthology has discovered several talented authors who show considerable promise for the future should they continue to publish their writing. The group all share an 'English' background that shows in the writing - grammar, spelling, but this is a good read that deservedly enjoys my five star rating. This is a book for adults, but there is nothing in its pages that would give me concern should a 13-year old read it. Thoroughly recommended.

While Licco Hazan, the narrator of this novel, was held captive at a Bulgarian labor camp in World War II, he could hardly imagine that one day he´d have a much brighter future in the far-off, frightening Amazon.

Accompanying the lives of this character and his family and people, Ilko Minev reconstructs the little-known and intriguing story of how Bulgaria’s 50,000 Jews were saved from the gas chambers during the heinous Nazi domination of Europe. Torn apart from his brother as a young prisoner, Licco is fortunate enough to count on people who help him flee to the neutral nation of Turkey Help comes from an improbable source: Albert Göring, the brother of Hermann Göring (a top Nazi party leader and designated successor of Adolf Hitler). Albert Göring is instrumental in helping Licco and other jews escape from a sure death. On this journey Licco meets another escapee, Berta - the woman of his life. By several twists of fate, the young couple ends up building a new life in an unknown land, the hot and humid Amazon. Meanwhile, Licco´s brother is still in Bulgaria, which has been transformed into a Soviet satellite under the dictatorship of Stalin.

The title of the book takes its inspiration from the world´s pacifist hymn "Where have all the flowers gone", first made famous by the sensual voice of Marlene Dietrich. A must read.

A Real Learning Experience By Herb Margolis thoroughly enjoyed reading and learning about the plight and flight of Bulgarian Jewry during the Holocaust years. The story personalizes actual events of so many brave souls that found refuge and success in other countries in the story of a young man fearless in his endeavor to find a better life in in foreign lands as far away as the jungles of the Amazon region of Brazil. Interesting historical insight about the “Good Brother” of Hermann Goering assisting in saving Jews of that time and an introduction to the settlement and growth of primitive life in the Amazon wet the appetite for more from this new face on the literary seen. It is well written, flows nicely and begs for more inquiry about these historical times from the author Mr. Minev.

I learned much about the Sephardic community in Bulgaria. We are reminded never to assume that a person is guilty of a crime just because he is related to one who has committed crimes. The example of this is the brother of Herman Goering who helped a number of Jews to escape certain death.I am reminded that Bulgaria treated Jews far better than did many other peoples.Herbert Ausubel, author of "Flower of God"

Outstanding portrait of exciting life By Ivan A A superbly written book about a turbulent and fast-changing era, with the struggles, hopes, and perseverance of a couple looking for a new life in a faraway country. I knew these people, I lived with them, and I know their integrity, hard work and morality. A real-life historical adventure!

Whether they are spirits of the departed or figments of an overactive imagination, ghosts are a staple in fiction. Storytellers have portrayed ghosts as scary, friendly, or annoying across many genres. Now, eight authors offer their own interpretations of ghosts through a collection of short stories that will appeal to fans of horror, fantasy, or young adult fiction. “Deathwatch” by Katie French - Teenage sisters Charlotte and Georgie stumble into a robbery, and their normal life gets flipped upside down. Worse, when the clerk kills one of the robbers, his face is covered in a supernatural swarm of bugs. Charlotte must be hallucinating. It's the only explanation for the terrible things she's seen. Everyone calls the clerk a hometown hero, but Charlotte's not so sure. Then a dead girl appears in her mirror with clues to the truth, and Charlotte learns there's more horror to this world than she ever expected. “Tides” by Sarah Dalton - Andrea wakes with sand on her feet. She is sleepwalking down to the sea every night, but remembers little more than a vague recollection of a boy who lives on the beach. With an absent father and a mother who would rather walk along the coast than look after her daughter, Andrea struggles to get by. She’s haunted, but from a memory, or a spirit? “Shadowspirit” by M.A. George - On a good day, Henta Mourngard is stalked by dreadspirits and netherphantoms, a living magnet for creatures of the afterlife. On a bad day, she finds herself communing with a demon of the underworld—worse yet, interrogating one—in a desperate attempt to track down the shadowspirit who has been her guide since infancy. Demons don’t take kindly to interrogation. And the search for a missing shadowspirit leads to places the living daren’t tread (lest they no longer qualify as living). ‘Tis unfortunate for Henta that today is not a “good day”. “The Little Girl” by Jamie Campbell - Sixteen-year-old Penny is moving house… again. Starting out in a small town, she is hopeful this time will be the last. As long as the little girl doesn’t follow her, she will be rid of her past hauntings. The only problem is, the little girl won’t let her go and now she is about to grow stronger than ever before. “The Ghost Below” by Ariele Sieling - White Rabbit gets sent to run cables in the bowels of the spaceship as a punishment. While working, she discovers that the ship's ghost might be more than he seems. “Slave Runner” by H.S. Stone - Malika and her sister are captured by slave traders but receive an unexpected gift of freedom when their captors encounter a deadly gathering of ghosts. The sisters escape to a nearby village, where they learn that the new sanctuary isn’t as safe as they thought it would be, and ghosts aren’t what they most need to fear. “Farewell Ohana (A Ghostly Mini-Wave)” by Sutton Shields - Maile Lahela is under attack by someone in the Kauai Camp for the Curiously Creepy. When she awakens one morning unable to see, her peculiar, yet loyal friends decide it’s time to escape the institution—something that’s never been done. But before they can leave, Maile has a mission of her own…one that could cost them their lives. Farewell Ohana is a short, fun-filled, emotional prequel to the events occurring in Overfalls, Wave Two of The Merworld Water Wars series by Sutton Shields. “Ghost Girl” by Susan Fodor - Zoey Saunders has her future mapped out, but an accident brings her life to an untimely end. In her new state of being, Zoey feels compelled to seek justice for her death and bring healing to her family who have become a shadow of their former selves. But what constitutes justice and will getting even ever be enough to replace the life she lost?

The anthology was well put together, and I read some authors I have not read before. Some great characters and innovative tales. My favorites were The Little Girl by Jamie Campbell, The Ghost Below by Ariele Sieling, and Ghost Girl by Susan Fodor. None of them were tired old ghost stories. They were unique and had creative endings. Well done.

By Abby Normal This had some great ghost stories to it and I felt it to have a high proportion of good vs bad ones. It's a quick read for those who don't have a lot of time to sit and spend hours on a book, yet it's not so short you feel like there was nothing to enjoy.

By featherlashes Not sure why I thought this was going to be another installment in the series. Just a heads up...it's not. Happily Ever After is a compilation of all the novellas and bonus scenes/epilogues in The Selection series and if you are up-to-date with reading the series then you have already read most of these. Die hard fans will likely love this one-stop shop for all the extras but I could have done without it. Don't mind me, just a little disgruntled. I should have read the synopsis first. Lesson learned. The Prince (with the two bonus chapters):★★★★☆Novella #0.5. This is basically the first 1/3 of The Selection from Prince Maxon's point of view. I liked that it showed the stressors Maxon has to deal with, his relationship with his parents, and his personal thoughts about the selection process and the girls. The Guard:★★★☆☆The Guard is a novella (#2.5) in author Kiera Cass's The Selection series. In the series, the female lead is America Singer who is torn between two loves in her life, Maxon and Aspen. Maxon's perspective is shared in the novella The Prince, and Aspen's perspective is shared in this novella. I have enjoyed the series overall and although I thought The Prince novella was unnecessary, it was interesting being inside Maxon's head. However, after reading The Guard, I almost wish I wasn't exposed to Aspen's point-of-view. There's a difference between a man being in love and a boy being in love and Aspen appears to be the latter. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this. Actually, there's a certain type of sweetness to being oblivious to everything except your heart's desire. But America is no longer a girl who has this luxury. She has grown and has been exposed to the complexities in her world and her eyes are now on more pressing matters. I've been Team Maxon since book one and that hasn't changed for me, especially after reading this book. The Queen:★★★★☆The Queen is a prequel novella (#0.4) in Kiera Cass's young adult, dystopian series titled: The Selection Series. This short story features Maxon's father and mother, King Clarkson and Queen Amberly, and includes the story of how they met through their generation's selection process. I think most readers don't like King Clarkson in The Selection Series, so I was curious if he would be portrayed any differently during his younger years as prince. The answer is...Nope. I have to admit though, Ms. Cass was much more subtle in her character development of Clarkson, but his need to control and his hard-handed threats are still shown through his interactions with others in this prequel. The cycle of violence rings loud and clear within the portrait of this royal family, but any suggestion that Clarkson is a victim rang on deaf ears with me. Amberly is the perfect little submissive, which is something I didn't really view her as in the series, but maybe I just forgot. Through Amberly's point of view, the two of them have a very promising future together, and they may very well be just what each other needs. The Queen gives quite a bit of insight into these two characters, and when compared to the series, does a great job of reinforcing the fairytale aspect of Maxon and America's love story. This novella is a wonderful addition to the series and I would recommend it to fans. The Favorite:★★★☆☆The Favorite is a novella (#2.6) in Kiera Cass's young adult, dystopia series titled The Selection. This short-story was a refreshing addition from Marlee's point of view. The characters in this series are great, but sometimes it's nice to read a new perspective...and see a new love story. If you have read the series then you know that Marlee falls in love with a guard: Carter and when discovered, they are caned as punishment. But Marlee's POV provides insight into a beautiful bond between two people that gets them through the hard times. I found the novella rather choppy and it didn't flow well in my opinion but the content was good. Three stars.Three scenes from Celeste’s POV:★★★☆☆Wow, so Celeste isn't the cold-hearted b*itch I thought she was. She's still a stuck-up snob who will do anything to be first but she is a bit complex like we all are. Can't say I like her character but I didn't mind reading these few scenes from her perspective.Lucy’s scene (bonus scene from The One):★★☆☆☆This is a tiny little scene from the maid Lucy's perspective. If this was a deleted scene collecting dust, then I see why Ms. Cass wanted to eventually offer it to readers but I certainly wouldn't have sought out Happily Ever After just for this. The bonus epilogue:★★☆☆☆Another tiny piece that gives fans a peek of their favorite characters' after the ending of The One. Again, it didn't really do anything for me but I'm sure there are some fans out there that will just squeal with joy at any little bit that extends the story for them.

Upside-this book was flawless. I feel like I finally have the closer I needed about most characters, and the only way Kiera Cass could have done better is by writing the whole series from Maxon's point of view :) Hurry up, book five!

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. If you're skeptical, buy it! It's worth it! By Akneman I was so excited when I saw this "prequel"/companion novel was releasing. Of course, I thought it was just the Prince, the Guard, and then the Queen and the Favorite in it with some extra pages with maps of Illea and author notes back then. Nevertheless, I still bought it because, um, hello!--it's still a Selection book! I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed (read: loved) this a lot more than I thought I would. It gives so much more insight to Marlee, Carter, Maxon, Aspen, Lucy, Celeste, Clarkson, and Amberly. You get to see scenes taking place that America never saw and what the other characters seemed to think about certain events and America, which is really cool. There's also a lot more to it than I gave it credit for! I mean, I think it's the biggest book of the series yet. It truly is a "must have companion"!! And besides... the bonus epilogue to The One is so sweet that it's worth buying just to read that part. I mean, c'mon, we all don't mind reading a bit more from America's perspective! ;)
