About the Author Captain Jaffee graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York in 1065. He sailed as a licensed deck officer in the merchant marine, receiving his master's papers (captain's license) at the age of twenty-six. He earned a master's degree in public administration from California State University. Formerly employed by the Maritime Administration as superintendent of the Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, he was first officer on the SS Jeremiah O'Brien during her historic six-month voyage to Normandy for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day in 1994. He has written sixteen books on the Merchant Marine, the Navy and maritime Academy training ships. His articles and stories have appeared in more than 100 publications. He was a technical consultant on the Atlas Warships Series and a contributor to the irginia Military Institute's three-volume Encyclopedia of Naval History. His most recent work is The Tugboats From A (A.G. Wells) to Z (USS Zuni).
