They've traded punches in knockdown brawls, crashed biplanes through barns, and raced to the rescue in fast cars. They add suspense and drama to the story, portraying the swimmer stalked by the menacing shark, the heroine dangling twenty feet below a soaring hot air balloon, or the woman leaping nine feet over a wall to escape a dog attack. Only an expert can make such feats of daring look easy, and stuntwomen with the skills to perform -- and survive -- great moments of action in movies have been hitting their mark in Hollywood since the beginning of film.

Here, Mollie Gregory presents the first history of stuntwomen in the film industry from the silent era to the twenty-first century. In the early years of motion pictures, women were highly involved in all aspects of film production, but they were marginalized as movies became popular, and more important, profitable. Capable stuntwomen were replaced by men in wigs, and very few worked between the 1930s and 1960s. As late as the 1990s, men wore wigs and women's clothes to double as actresses, and were even "painted down" for some performances, while men and women of color were regularly denied stunt work.

For decades, stuntwomen have faced institutional discrimination, unequal pay, and sexual harassment even as they jumped from speeding trains and raced horse-drawn carriages away from burning buildings. Featuring sixty-five interviews, Stuntwomen showcases the absorbing stories and uncommon courage of women who make their living planning and performing action-packed sequences that keep viewers' hearts racing.

Review "This is a joyous, intense book: Gregory is bracingly up front about the outright sexism that has dogged professional stuntwomen almost from the beginningBut Gregory, who interviewed dozens of stuntwomen of all ages, focuses on much more than injustices and legal battles. What comes through most strongly is the joy these women take from their work."―New York Times

"While Stuntwomen: The Untold Hollywood Story fits comfortably on the shelf of any film history buff, it also provides essential relevance to those interested in feminism, American social/culture studies, and even contemporary law. Mollie Gregory has done a splendid job"―Mel Neuhaus, film writer, Examiner.com

"Stuntwomen, a history of American stuntwomen from silent films up through the movies of the present, is an exhaustively researched, comprehensive volume. Gregory's book fills a void in film history about this interesting, often overlooked, and vital cog in the film industry."―Sheila Benson, former chief film critic for the Los Angeles Times and writer for the National Society of Film Critics

"Mollie Gregory clearly knows her subject inside out, and writes about it vividly and excitingly."―Kevin Brownlow, Film-maker and film historian

"[T]his book aims to uncover just how bad the institutionalised sexism of Hollywood studios was for stuntwomen who were often overlooked in favour of men in wigs."―Wow 247

"[. . .] Smart, thorough, and well researched [. . .] covers the film industry's most daring ladies and their feats from silent era [to present day]."―Los Angeles Magazine

"[. . .] This chronicle is long overdue and Gregory seems to have found the right people to help tell the tale."―Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy - Holiday Book Roundup

"[. . .] This is a joyous, intense book: Gregory is bracingly up front about the outright sexism that has dogged professional stuntwomen almost from the beginning [. . .]"―New York Times

"[. . .] [D]ocumentary filmmaker and author Mollie Gregory writes an in-depth account of the stuntwomen who have performed on the big screen and television [. . .] to give readers a close view of the exciting and dangerous world these women love to face on a daily basis."―Shelf Awareness

"In her engaging and enlightening book, Gregory digs into this little known corner of Hollywood history and gives voice to the women who have risked their lives for a few (perilous) moments on the big screen.

[...] a fascinating look at a risky profession"―Becky Krystal, Washington Post

About the Author Mollie Gregory is the author of Women Who Run the Show: How a Brilliant and Creative New Generation of Women Stormed Hollywood, 1973–2000.

Not the book I was expecting By CJS This book goes through the history of stuntwomen in Hollywood from the silent days to current films and t.v. shows. The book describes the challenges women face including men putting on wigs to do stunts for women because they think the women can't do them, the sexual harassment, lower pay, and not being able to move up to positions such as stunt coordinator. This was all well done and covered all of this information very well. However, I had thought the book would provide biographical information on the different stuntwomen throughout history and include their credits. This book did not do that. You got a few sentences of biographical data and a few credits but not the biographical information I was looking for.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A thrilling and inspiring story By Sunscreen101 Brings the thrilling, unknown story of these amazing women to life in a totally entertaining way. The history, from the silent movie era to today's CGI is entertainingly told by the women themselves. Stories about jumping from a galloping horse onto a moving train, dangling from a helicopter, being eaten by the shark in Jaws, dangling from a helicopter are interspersed with the story of the women's fight for jobs, recognition and safety on the set. A terrific gift for movie lovers, this is the kick-a** genesis of today's female action stars.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Early Stuntwomen's Story By Larry Telles Mollie Gregory captured the true events of action women in early film. Catching the bad guys each week in high heels and long skirts. Many of these women were making $8 a week while doing their own stunts. This book is just another example how women played a role in early film and received very little credit. Thanks Mollie for great insight!

On his death bed, Lord Pembroke took great care to try to ensure the future of his beautiful, unconventional niece, Lady Jane. Her debutante ball featured the most eligible bachelors of London society. But when the night of the dance arrives, things do not go as planned.

To escape the superficial drama of the party, Jane seeks refuge in the garden of Rosewood Hall, where she discovers a gravely injured girl. With her last breath, the child beseeches Jane to find another girl, Mary, and to save her from the same fate she has suffered. Lady Jane vows to fulfill this final wish, a promise that will entangle her in a dangerous intrigue and take her from the safety of home to the hard streets of London. With the faded inscription in a tattered novel as her only physical clue, Jane sets out to investigate the region’s orphanages and infiltrate London’s most elegant homes. Can she save young Mary from a swiftly approaching doom?

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A triumphant story for Annis Bell! By sunnyreader I have fallen more and more in love with mysteries about the mid to later 1800's and this is one of the best as far as I'm concerned! The author has developed the characters, both good and bad, to a degree that you feel quite comfortable with Lady Jane and all the other good characters but you really wouldn't like to meet up with any of the less savory ones! The story flows so well that I just could not stand to turn my kindle off when I had no alternative and couldn't wait to pick it up again - even if I had a mere five minutes to read! Lady Jane's search for Mary brings to light how orphanages and workhouses were in the 1800's in England. Poverty was much worse than anyone can imagine and the death rate of children in those horrible places cannot possibly be known! Still, this is not a dark story but one of hope and triumph. Therefore I can't wait for the second book with Lady Jane and her husband, Captain Westcott (available in late October, I understand).

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lady Jane & the American Cop Show By Greg M The plot and the setting are both interesting and the story gets off to an unusual, interesting, start. From there on things go a bit downhill. It is a pity.Lady Jane and her husband spend most of the book being gratuitously and incomprehensibly angry at one another; whatever the reasons why the author insists on depicting her characters behave like thwarted adolescents in one another's company, ultimately it is annoying. The story itself, which I for one find interesting albeit depressing, is stretched out beyond repair; as a result, a number of threads are left dangling (what happened to the disappearing master?) and the end comes abruptly; how did our beloved captain recoup those promissory notes? How did the cavalry come in a the very brink of time to save the lady in distress? How did the couple pas from the adolescent phase into one another's arms? etc. We placed through a few hundred pages for this, so some detail on the loose ends would have been welcome: it's not as if there was no room left. But, the above could have been palatable, if only with some effort, had the dialogue been even remotely reminiscent of the setting! Ms Bell's sets her story in late 19the century England. Her characters sound like they walked out of a 21st century American cop show! "What? No!", "open up!", "is that a fact" (sneeringly), et alia abound, and one can just see the man pulling out his badge as he gets ready to storm the castle!Presumably, Ms Bell has an interest in independant 19th century ladies and, more so, in the poor state of orphanages in 19th century England -- and has probably researched the latter to some extent. In the interests of matching characters to the historical setting she chooses, may I dare suggest she also research the way people spoke at that chosen time. Surely she knows how.

A heartfelt addition to McFarlane’s epic canon of hockey writingFrom its moving introductory homage to the late Jean Béliveau, to its subtle, remarkable considerations of how the sport was shaped by legends like Newsy Lalonde, Gordie Howe, Dick Irvin Sr., Ted Kennedy, and Hobey Baker, to its poignant lament for the untimely death of American hockey hero “Badger” Bob Johnson, Golden Oldies is the product of a lifetime love of hockey and a career in the game that spans six decades.Golden Oldies explores the life of Sprague Cleghorn, a pioneer tough guy who went from the bright lights of Broadway to a boondock in the Ottawa Valley to stardom before and during the first years of the NHL. It follows the trail of Patsy Guzzo and his RCAF mates in 1948, ridiculed at home but rewarded with Olympic gold in Europe. And it chronicles the career-ending injuries to Ace Bailey, the last Leafs NHL scoring leader, the shameful treatment of the Canucks’ Mike Robitaille, and the horrific and near fatal injury suffered by Buffalo goalie Clint Malarchuk.

In Golden Oldies, Brian McFarlane takes us on a wonderful journey among hockey's greatest heroes and memorable NHL sagas, some well known and some not… but each story very worthy on its own and fully enjoyable from both first person and second-hand accounts. The underlying order may read as "random" chapters, yet the history of the game intertwines among generations as do these stories. To the credit of the author's approach, one can imagine oneself in front of a fireplace or at a local pub, hearing Mr. McFarlane or the named players spinning their yarn and bringing to life the Golden Oldies of yesteryear. One may think they know hockey history, but think again, until you have a chance to learn more from this outstanding book. It both educates and entertains and is a must-read for true fans of the game. Thank you, Mr. McFarlane, for again putting your vivid, story-telling pen to paper!

I mostly stick to hiking myself, but I’ve wondered for a long time what Parkour and Free Running were all about. You see a lot of young punks that are into it, and for a crusty old broad like me that can be a bit of a turn off, lol. This book helped me understand the history of the sport, and to actually see it as a sport. Free Running has a lot to offer as a method of fitness, and when you separate the culture of it from the actual exercise it really looks like a lot of fun. The book was well written and does exactly what it promises in the title. If you are curious about Free Running and Parkour, pick this up and get started.

The Ultimate Guide By Kerah13 I have some friends who joined my university's underground parkour club and I always wondered what the hype was all about. What on earth were they doing? Julian Hulse's "Free Running: The Ultimate Guide for Understanding Parkour" helped to shed some light on this sport and philosophy. Before reading this book, I didn't really see Parkour or Free Running as a sport and saw it more as a bunch of college kids screwing around on campus. This guide delivered exactly what it promised: understanding of the sport and philosophy of Parkour and Free Running. It's a short guide, so there's not much time to teach technique, but it will help you decide if this is the right sport for you.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Decent guide. By Steven Holt I like learning new things so I decided to get this book in order to learn more about parkour. At first I thought that parkour was just a form of gymnastics, but I found out that there is so much more to the actual act. There's a lot of techniques and methodologies that go into parkour that a bystander would not expect. This guide does a decent job at explaining the core concepts of parkour and as someone who was completely unaware of the culture of parkour I felt like I learned a lot. The reason I gave it 4 stars is that the total book is actually not that long. This is more of a book for beginners rather than seasoned and experienced experts. Overall I would recommend this guide to people wanting to learn about Parkour.

It breaks down swimming into simple steps that anyone can follow. Most people usually have one stroke they do and even that stroke they do poorly. This book tells you all of the different options and how you can greatly improve on each of these strokes. It also covers drills you can do to become a better swimming. This includes isolating your breathing and your kicking strokes in order to maximize your speed in the water. I feel more like a fish after reading this book than a human. This is a must read for anyone who wants to be a better swimmer!

Brilliant and seductive By Amazon Customer Often I end up on my pc a little late in the night after every tiring day’s job, and reading Jules Elbesheusen's work, especially this one, I kid you not, the writing gets me high, owing to the clarity, detail and subconsciously seducing style. The detail he pens just about anything goes to such minute as well as elaborate levels of reality. With Jules' writing it is not only old school, but also, a sort of an amusing dance of metaphors and contrasts. Pleasure to read, the work of a master, the imagination of a genius portraying the human condition.

29 of 32 people found the following review helpful. Quiroga's best By O. M. Suarez Horacio Quiroga has been considered one of the best Latin American short story writers. This book is the best proof of that assesment. It is not fair to judge Quiroga's style based only upon the cruelty of "La Gallina Degollada" (The decapitated chicken), which -by the way- is a lesson on how to write short stories. This diminishes the quality of the other tales, sprinkled with social testimony (and subtle denunciations), love stories, and with plenty of humanity. Quiroga's love for nature is reflected occasionally in this book as his characters struggle against it. Other books are better examples: Cuentos de la Selva (a must in children's literature) and two of my favorite ones: Anaconda and El Regreso de Anaconda. However this book demonstrates how few words a genial writer needs to describe insanity, bravery, and love as unavoidable parts of Humankind.

By Jeff B If you’re looking for an informative, entertaining biography of Orioles’ third baseman Manny Machado, look no further than Bill Redban’s “Manny Machado: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Manny Machado.” This unauthorized biography outlines Machado’s complete career so far, including the adversities he had to overcome and the love of the game that helped him to persevere. The biography is well written and organized, following Machod’s career quite well. My only complaint about the book is in the formatting, as there is a bit too much white space in places that forces you to have to turn pages more often than you should. Other than that, it’s a terrific book!

By Ms. Bookaholic This is an entertaining and inspirational book about the life and success of Orioles third baseman Manny Machado. Despite his young career, he was able to prove his love for the game, his accomplishment and perseverance against adversities, a well as his mindset that lead him to where he is now today. The author really did a great job in writing this informative biography in an easy, engaging style that would make you want to flip the pages quickly. Highly recommended!

No one ever said high school was easy. In this hilarious and heartwarming debut, one high school senior has to ask himself how much he's willing to give up in order to fit in.

Kevin seems to have it all: he's popular, good looking, and on his way to scoring a college hockey scholarship. However, he's keeping two big secrets. The first is that he failed an assignment and is now forced to take the most embarrassing course ever--domestic tech. The second is that he is falling for his domestic tech classmate, Claire.

As far as Kevin is concerned, Claire does have it all: she's funny, smart, beautiful, and confident. But she's off-limits. Because Kevin knows what happens when someone in his group dares to date a girl who isn't a cheerleader, and there's no way he is going to put himself—or Claire—through that.

But steering clear of the girl of his dreams is a lot harder than Kevin thought…especially when a cooking project they are paired together for provides the perfect opportunity for things to heat up between them outside the classroom….

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. An authentic book with realistic characters By Stephanie Faris There are so many things to love about The Jock and the Fat Chick. The story is told from the male POV and the author, who is definitely not a male, did such an amazing job of capturing the mind of the adolescent male. I also loved the fact that when we saw the "fat chick" through the main character's eyes, not once did she ever come across as even overweight. We saw her as he did--beautiful and curvaceous. In fact, the main guy was completely unattracted to bony girls. I know men like that exist...I've met them. It just made me want to hug this fictional guy on behalf of all of those men who like some curves on their women!

The Hardships of High School By Stacy L Sabala Book Review- The Jock and the Fat Chick by Nicole WintersKevin is working hard to get a scholarship to play hockey. Unfortunately he didn’t do well on an assignment his coach gave him. Now coach is worried about Kevin’s nutrition and Kevin is worried about his grade. Coach explains he is going to take Domestic Tech for the next month. It will help his grade and teach him about healthy food. Kevin is embarrassed and doesn’t want his teammates to know. They will give him a hard time about it just like if they knew he liked curvy girls. When he goes to the required class he is paired up with Claire. He is instantly drawn to her. He starts learning all sorts of things about food from Claire. He also starts to like her a lot. Then she steps back and asks to be friends with benefits. Kevin is torn but likes her too much to say no.As things go along he falls farther for her and he is hoping to change her mind about being FWBs. When he makes his move things don’t go as he hoped. He tries to do anything to make himself feel better. He gets pulled into the thoughts of the in-crowd and does things he really doesn’t want to do. His life takes a turn for the worst and he feels awful. He has to decide what he wants and how he wants to be without what others think about him. He wants to play hockey and go to Michigan. He also misses Claire. He is unsure about what to do next. This book was not quite what I expected. Kevin was too worried about what his friends thought to be honest. He went along with things and said things his friends expected. He was afraid to be himself. It was sad to read. When he met Claire everything changed. He was afraid to admit to his friends but he changed a little until everything fell apart. They had a great partnership during their class. It was a fascinating part of the story. The author created an interesting story involving the hardships of high school, fitting in and the expectations of teenagers. It’s sad how teens are scared to be themselves. The author did a great job portraying this through Kevin’s character. It took a while but he finally found his way. The change that occurred in him was great to see. I give this book a 3.5 out of 5.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not sure By Rose I'm not sure how to describe this book. For starters, it would have been nice to have read from Claire's POV as well as Kevin's. I have to be honest for most of the book I felt like I was reading a cook book and work out book. There really wasn't alot of interaction between the two main characters. It didn't feel like a romance at all really.

A contest of strength between peoples will always interest human beings; rivalry in the arms and implements of war is one of the fascinations of national competition. It is therefore a matter of interest both to the anthropologist and the practical archer to know what is the actual casting quality and strength of the best specimens of bows of different aboriginal tribes and nations of the world. And, as further incentive to this study, is the rapid disappearance of archery as civilization advances. In the following experiments a detailed test of the shooting quality of a series of bows was undertaken, and with it certain correlated experiments concerning the penetration of arrows. Most of these bows were selected from hundreds in possession of the Museum of Anthropology of the University of California. They are the best preserved and strongest specimens in that large collection. In no instance is it apparent that age has led to deterioration in their strength. In fact, the greatest modern flight shot—four hundred and fifty-nine yards—has recently been made by Ingo Simon at La Tourque, France, with a Turkish composite bow reported to be nearly two hundred years old. Age increases the brittleness, resiliency, and casting power of a wooden bow up to the point where fragility renders it unsafe to shoot. In all our tests we broke only two bows: a specimen from the Yukon, and an Osage Indian bow. To insure that no personal element of muscular weakness entered into the problem of the casting power of these weapons I had them shot by an old and experienced archer, Mr. W. J. Compton, a very powerful man and one accustomed to shoot the bow for more than thirty years. I also was able to draw the strongest of these bows, and myself checked up the results. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great resource for archery enthusiasts By Amazon Customer I got the book for my husband, who is a bowyer. He said the fact that the author studied with people who were there when archery first became popular in America makes the information priceless. He feels some of the information is a little clouded due to the lack of knowledge at the time, but from a historical standpoint it is a very good read. His only complaint was that he wished the diagrams and pictures would have been closer to the parts in the book where they were mentioned to avoid constantly flipping back and forth. He said he definitely recommends this to anyone who is getting into archery, and wants to know more about the history of the sport.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Does it Follow the String? By Ron Braithwaite The book is full of interesting information but I wouldn't want to draw many major conclusions from Pope's findings. He is usually working with 'one of a kind' artifacts and it is unwise, in my opinion, to base opinions on the bow making or arrow making qualities of an entire group or tribe of people based on a solitary specimen. For example, a solitary Ute Indian bow and arrow might not be nearly typical of most Ute bows with arrows. No doubt some individuals made good stuff, others not so good. Also, it is unlikely that a particular tribesman gave up his best stuff to an itinerant anthropologist. Give him something that's about to break, anyway. Also, I disagree with Pope that his antique bows are in every way as strong now as they were when first made. What sense does that make? He actually broke some old and brittle bows and others got to creaking and cracking so badly that he couldn't shoot themMost interestingly, however, is the fact the the Univ. of Calif., Berkely, museum and wealthy collectors would put valuable artifacts in Pope's hands for 'testing'. Weird by today's standards. Nowadays only an expert with a special need MIGHT be permitted to touch one and nobody would be permitted to bend one. His hunting experiences are perhaps the best part of the book in that he was one of the first modern archers to actually go out and shoot numerous deer and several grizzly bears with a bow.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This two book set is a must read, great honest insight By steve reilly I been reading civil war books, for going on 50 years. I been to all the battlefields and had a number of family members in the war, some killed in action. I have to tell you, I learned more of what happened behind closed doors in this set of two books, then all of my 50 years of reading. No two ways about it. Major Gen. Wilson was a rat when he was a Jr. officer. He told who ever he worked for, on their staff, everything that was being said by the Sr. officers and writes about it. Great insight into the senior union officer corps. He was a West Pointer and looked down on officers who were not. I can go on and on about these two books, just buy them. His reporting on just Antietam, is worth the cost. The only person he protects is Lt. General Grant, but does talk about the officers around him, tempting him to drink. He even writes about the Spanish American War, Teddy and his ruff riders don't come off well. He puts Teddy where he belongs, fighting a war with his own press corps along, to turn him into a hero. Might be the most honest civil books, I ever read. Don't buy just one of the set, get them both.

'Pathways' traces the history of Britain's historic paths, from ancient processional routes and Roman roads, through smugglers' trails and right up to the pedestrian zones in today's towns and cities. It's a fascinating tale which intersects with every aspect of Britain's development through the centuries and tells us so much about our forebears and their lives. In twenty chapters the book explores paths used for commerce and trade, such as drovers' roads and packhorse routes; dykes, ditches and roads used for the exercise of military power; religious routes from prehistoric avenues to medieval pilgrimages; and pathways built specifically for leisure, whether stalking tracks in Scotland, in municipal parks or on seaside promenades. The book was originally published in hardback by Guardian Books in 2011 and sold out two editions. This version includes all the chapters and information in the original book, just without the pictures. The twenty walks described in the book are available for free download from the Walkingworld.com website. The Walkingworld website features over 6500 walks in Britain and beyond, all with step-by-step guides and Ordnance Survey maps.

When Tony Nathan got his hands on a football, it was like Superman putting on his cape for the first time. He stepped onto the field and became a different person-a hero destined to change the course of Alabama history. Somehow, when he held a football, he knew exactly what to do, and it was those instincts that helped him navigate life in one of the most tumultuous cities in America. In this powerful memoir, Tony reveals how he summoned the courage to "run with purpose" during the times when racial tensions ran high as he grew from a boy trapped by the racial divide in Birmingham, Alabama, into a successful man and football hero. Inspirational and uplifting, Touchdown Tony is not only a behind-the-scenes look at a great football player's life and career, it is also a story of redemption and one man's hope to change the future.

CHAPTER ONE

MOM AND POPS

As a twelve-year-old kid in 1968, I had no notions of being a professional football player. In fact, I hadn’t played much football up until that point. Sure, I’d played with the other boys in my neighborhood, but I’d never played on an actual team in an organized league. While I enjoyed playing the sport, I didn’t really like running with the football. I much preferred being the one who did the tackling, rather than being the one who was getting tackled. Even though I didn’t have big dreams for my future, I knew two things I didn’t want to do when I became an adult: I didn’t want to pick cotton, and I didn’t want to work in a steel mill. My father, William Nathan II, worked the graveyard shift at Conner Steel, which was one of the bigger plants in Birmingham, Alabama. My father, whom my family calls Pops, started his career as a laborer in the steel mill. Because of his strong work ethic, he was eventually promoted to mechanic. Pops went to school and learned how to fix things—a skill that was very valuable at the steel mill. My father worked hard, and I rarely heard him complain about his job. But working at the steel mill was dangerous, and hearing the horror stories about the accidents there made me realize that I wanted no part of it. Pouring steel wasn’t easy, and the plant was always hot——especially during the sweltering Alabama summers. I remember seeing my dad covered in grease, dirt, and sweat when he came home in the morning. He always looked exhausted. I was sure that I didn’t want to punch the clock at the mill when I was older. I also knew I didn’t want to pick cotton, because that’s what I did when I spent time at my grandfather’s farm. My paternal grandfather, William Nathan, had a farm near Uniontown, Alabama, which is where my dad grew up. My grandfather’s farm was about ten acres, and he raised cows and other animals. He also planted cotton, corn, watermelons, peanuts, potatoes, and other fruits and vegetables every spring. Farming was hard work, and my grandfather went to the fields every day. When I was twelve or thirteen, I spent a lot of weekends and most of the summer working my grandfather’s farm. He woke up every morning about 4:00 a.m., and then he’d get me up a couple of hours later. Though I could have helped him with his earliest chores, he’d always let me sleep a little longer. We’d harness a mule to a wagon, and then the mule would take us out to his land, which was a couple of miles from the house. The mule knew exactly where to go, so we’d sleep during the short ride. Once we were old enough, my two brothers, two sisters (my biological aunt Erma Gean was only a couple of years older than me, so I refer to her as my sister), and I picked cotton, hoed weeds, and helped my grandfather harvest the fruits and vegetables. During those weekends and hot summer days, we usually worked from sunup till sundown. Those days were long. The constant threat of being eaten alive by fire ants and gnats made it even worse. It was difficult work, and I didn’t want to do it, but I learned to respect anyone who did. It was a tough way to make a living. More than anything, it taught me what I didn’t want to do with the rest of my life. Don’t get me wrong: I appreciated what my father and grandfather did for a living, and I certainly didn’t think the work was beneath me. By having me work on the farm, my dad and grandfather gave me an opportunity to see how they were raised and what they had to do to survive, and I’ve always respected them for what they did. And they definitely passed on a strong work ethic to me—a valuable lesson that has served me well. Even though I didn’t want any cotton picking in my future, I also knew that if farming was what I had to do to make my way in life, then that’s what I would do. In the fields, I learned that you do what you have to do to make ends meet and provide for your family. And if I had to work in a steel mill, then I knew I could do that, too. If it was good enough for my father, it was good enough for me. My father was my mentor and is now my best friend. I can’t thank him enough for providing me with the chance to do what I wanted in life. Pops didn’t have much in terms of material possessions when he was growing up. He went to school, and he worked on the farm; he did what he needed to do to help his family survive. After high school, my dad joined the army and was stationed at Fort Rucker in Dale County, Alabama. A week before my dad was to be deployed to fight in the Korean War, the United States and North Korea signed an armistice ending the three-year-old conflict. Obviously, he was among the lucky ones. Pops spent the next two years working as a drill sergeant at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. He was discharged from the army in July 1955, following the end of the Korean War. The year before my dad joined the army in 1953, he met my mother, Louise, whose sister was dating one of his brothers. My mom said she really wasn’t attracted to my dad initially, but he seemed to grow on her because he was at her house so often. Even though my mom was only fifteen years old, Pops persuaded her parents to let them marry on Christmas Day 1955. My dad was twenty-two years old on his wedding day. While my mother would be considered too young nowadays, they’ve been happily married for nearly sixty years. They taught me a lot about the sacrifices a husband and wife have to make for a marriage to work. In the spring of 1955, Pops moved to Birmingham and my mom joined him there the next spring, where they started their lives together. I was born on December 14, 1956. My sister, Diane, was born two years later, and then my brothers, Vincent and Cedric, came along after her. I was five years older than Vince and ten years older than Cedric, and I still regret that I missed so much of Cedric’s childhood. I was out of the house by the time he went to high school, but despite our age difference, we’re still very close today. When I was seven years old, my aunt Erma Gean came to live with us in Birmingham after my maternal grandmother died. Erma Gean was only two years older than I was, so she’s always been more like my sister than my aunt. When I was a kid, she and I spent some fun times together at my maternal grandparents’ farm. My mom’s parents, Dorsey and Mary Williams, lived about twenty-five miles from Grandpa Nathan’s farm. I loved spending time with Erma Gean. She and I liked to run through the cotton rows and cornfields together. We ran to the end of dirt roads and back. She was probably the one who taught me how to run. Erma Gean was bigger than me, and I had a difficult time keeping up with her. Even though she might have been faster than me, I was determined to ramp up my speed. By the end of the day, my calves were usually swollen from trying to catch her. Sometimes, we rode my grandfather’s big pig in the front yard, which was quite an adventure. Erma Gean and I were always looking for ways to have fun. Once I reached high school and was old enough to drive, I went to work for a man who owned a farm near my aunt Elizabeth’s house. The man paid me three dollars a day to drive a tractor. I was lucky that I didn’t have to help bale the hay, like the other boys who were younger than me. They would load up a wagon with hay, and then I’d drive the tractor to the barn. At the time, three dollars a day was a lot of money to me, so at the end of the summer, I didn’t want to go back to Birmingham. But Pops told the farmer he couldn’t keep me because I had to go back to school. Being young and naive, I tried to talk my dad into letting me stay. I told him I’d just drop out of school. Fortunately, Pops persuaded me to go back to Birmingham by promising me a weekly allowance of three dollars. That’s all it took to change my mind. My mother and father couldn’t have been more different, and you know what they say about how opposites attract. That was my parents in a nutshell. My father is a soft-spoken man and always has a smile on his face. People like to say that Pops has never met a stranger. I have great admiration for my father regarding the way he treats other people and shows them respect. He’s a levelheaded man and rarely becomes angry—I remember only a very few times when he actually raised his voice. My father is a cool individual. My dad’s friends called him “Coon Man” because he’s a great coon hunter. Hunting has always been his outlet; it’s how he gets away from everybody else and the chaos of life. He loves being in the woods, and while he was still working in the noisy, busy steel mill, he enjoyed the freedom of the woods and having time to relax. He also likes to train dogs to chase coons, so while I was growing up, we usually had a backyard full of hunting dogs. As soon as the school day ended on Friday, we’d jump into my dad’s truck and head to my grandfather’s farm. I liked going to the farm with Pops, but I didn’t like to hunt. In fact, I’ve only been hunting with him twice. The first time, my mom made Pops take me because she wasn’t convinced he was actually hunting when he left home. After Pops came home empty-handed two or three times, my mother started to wonder if he wasn’t really spending the weekend at a honky-tonk. My dad blamed it on his sorry dogs. Still, my mom made him take me the next time for good luck. My grandfather came along, too, but we didn’t see a coon the entire weekend. At the end of Saturday night’s hunt, I told him, “Pops, now we’re in trouble. Momma sent me with you for good luck.” Fortunately, my grandfather had a raccoon in his deep freezer that he’d recently killed. We stopped by to get it, then let it thaw out on the way home. When we showed it to my mom, she said, “I’m going to have to send Tony with you every time!” That wasn’t exactly what I wanted to hear. Although I enjoyed spending time with my dad and grandfather, I wasn’t particularly excited about hunting. You have to hunt coons at night, and you never know whether you’ll actually see one. It was usually pretty cold when we hunted, and there wasn’t enough action to keep me interested—or warm. I would have rather been playing baseball, basketball, or football with my friends than chasing a raccoon through the woods. I guess I don’t have the patience required for hunting. On our second hunting trip, I followed Pops around for what seemed like forever. His dogs finally picked up a raccoon’s scent and took off running. We started to chase the dogs, but I quickly lost sight of my dad, who was in front of me. His dogs chased the raccoon up a tree. Pops could hear the dogs, but he couldn’t find me. After going in circles for about thirty minutes, his dogs lost interest in the coon and came back. Then they started barking and charged another tree. Pops found me leaning against a tree, sound asleep. “Hey, Pops, where’s the truck?” I asked, after he woke me up. “I gotta go shoot this coon,” he said. “You go back to the truck.” When Pops returned to the truck, I said, “You’re going to have to get you another partner. This is the last hunt for me.” I never went hunting with Pops again. Pops loves the sport, and it works for him—but it isn’t for me. Spending all night in the woods just isn’t my idea of fun. My brothers, Vince and Cedric, didn’t like coon hunting much, either. Fortunately, Pops found a boy in our neighborhood who liked to hunt, and they’ve been hunting together for about thirty-five years. While Pops is a quiet man, my mother is loud, boisterous, and outspoken. When Mom came to watch my games, she was usually the loudest person in the stands. If the woman has an opinion, she’ll let you know what it is. She is spunky and likes to get her point across. When my mom wants to talk, she doesn’t mind talking. When she’s tired of talking about something, she’ll let you know that, too. My mother was a homemaker, and her primary job was raising her family. She taught herself how to sew and earned extra money by making clothes for others. To save money, she made clothes for my brothers, sisters, and me. My clothes didn’t have tags from department stores, but I knew no one else could buy replicas of them—my clothes were one of a kind. My mom also worked as a caretaker and tended to the sick and elderly when she was needed. She was always busy and rarely sat still. Make no mistake: my mom was the boss when I was growing up. She had to raise three boys and two girls. She had her hands full. She is a big-boned woman with a large frame and booming voice. She didn’t play around when it came to discipline, and she didn’t mind if others disciplined us, too. Where I grew up, the parents believed it took a village to raise a child. If you were at a friend’s house and stepped out of line, his parents took it upon themselves to discipline and spank you. When we returned home, our parents spanked us again because somebody else had to discipline us. The threat of double jeopardy usually kept us out of trouble. My momma made it very clear to us that we did not want to embarrass our family. We were taught to respect other people, obey our elders, and not get into trouble. She didn’t want us bringing negative attention to our family. My momma likes to say that she and my dad tried to raise us to do right and then let God do the rest. As Proverbs 22:6 teaches, “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” My parents were also firm believers of Proverbs 23:13, which says: “Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish them with the rod, they will not die.” There was a clear chain of command in our house. My mother and father were in charge, and my brothers, sisters, and I were expected to follow their rules. They also expected us to attend church and Sunday school at St. James Baptist Church in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Birmingham every week. We had to obey our teachers in school and complete our daily chores without complaining. There was a rotating schedule of chores, and we each had different duties every week. If it was my turn to wash dishes for a week, I couldn’t do anything else after dinner until the dishes were clean. It was the same thing with sweeping and mopping the floors, washing and hanging out the clothes, or cleaning up the yard. If I didn’t attend church on Sunday morning because I was too tired or didn’t feel well, I wasn’t allowed to do anything else the rest of the day. I had to stay in the house and couldn’t go outside. I didn’t skip church very often, because I didn’t want to miss out on playing with my friends. When I was younger, we lived in Parker Heights, which was across the street from Birmingham’s airport. Our neighborhood was near Daniel Payne College, which was a historically black college until it closed in 1979. Our neighbors had seven boys, and Vince and I played sports with them as much as possible. Our backyard was about fifty feet wide and their backyard was about as big. Together, we had a 100-yard-long football field. We played football so much that we killed the grass in both yards. After a while, my dad didn’t even own a lawnmower. He never complained about his grass. That’s the way Pops was. He cared more about us having fun than he did about the appearance of his yard, even if some of our neighbors liked to complain about it. When I was about seven years old, I told Pops I wanted a football of my own. At the time, he didn’t have the extra money to buy me one. So he did something even better—he made one for me. Pops was taking upholstery classes at the time, and he and his instructor sewed me a cloth football and stuffed it with cotton and rags. My friends and I played with that football until the next Christmas, when I found a real one under the tree. That’s what I remember most about my father. Even if he didn’t have the money to buy me everything I wanted, he found a way to make me happy. Because of those long days I spent working in the cotton fields, I learned to appreciate everything my parents gave me. More than anything, I appreciated the sacrifices they made to ensure that my brothers, sisters, and I had a better life when we were adults than they’d had. My family learned to make the most of what we had. There’s no doubt in my mind that the work ethic I witnessed in my mom and dad made me a success at Woodlawn High School, the University of Alabama, and the National Football League. From an early age, my parents taught me to do my job, do it well, and not make excuses. More important, my parents taught me to respect people and treat them the way I wanted to be treated. I had no idea how valuable those lessons would be once I started attending Woodlawn High School in Birmingham.

By Itsy Bitsy Book Bits I give this book 4 stars.Touchdown Tony: Running With a Purpose, is the inspiring autobiography of Tony Nathan, who was a running back for the University of Alabama and the Miami Dolphins. Tony was an African-American from Birmingham, Alabama, who grew up at a time when schools in the South were still segregated. This obviously caused some hardships for Tony and his family, especially when he started high school and was just one of a handful of African-Americans at a high school which had just started busing students as part of forced integration. Not only was he in a very small minority of students at Woodlawn High School, he was also trying to become part of a football team which was mostly white. Throughout his life, Tony was lucky enough to be raised by supportive parents, hard-working people who instilled in Tony their values, such as a strong work ethic as well as a deep faith. He and Pops, as he called his dad, were extremely close, and his mother was always looking out for what was best for her son. Besides his parents, he was always surrounded by coaches, assistant coaches, and staff who reiterated the values that his parents had taught him. Tony had a lot to overcome, not just as a football player, but in day to day life, and the support he received from everyone was instrumental in his success. Tony was also blessed with God-given athletic talent, but he had to avoid the pitfalls that many talented people struggle with.Because this is an autobiography, you get a real sense of who Tony Nathan is and was. Tony doesn't pull any punches, and he is honest in his story about mistakes he made, as well as things that he accomplished, both on the field and off. Touchdown Tony is a heart-warming story, as well. The relationships that he had with his parents, his wife, his coaches, and his teammates are written about in a very warm, sometimes humorous manner. His stories about legendary coaches Bear Bryant and Don Shula were very revealing about those 2 men, and how they also influenced Tony's life. This is not just a book about sports. It's a story of faith, love, and achieving your goals, despite the odds.

By Cornhusker In his inspiring memoir Touchdown Tony: Running with a Purpose, Tony Nathan shares his story of growing up in the segregated South, only to be forced to attend a school out of his neighborhood due to federal bussing policies. Yet, it was at this school that Tony first realized his potential as a football player and the ability of sports to bring the city of Birmingham Alabama together. It was Nathan’s incredible work ethic and determination to give everyone respect that not only propelled him to stardom at the University of Alabama under legendary coach “Bear” Bryant, but also gave him the opportunity to play and coach in the NFL, including two Super Bowls. Touchdown Tony is a beautifully written autobiography of one man’s refusal to be a victim and rise above racism. Nathan shares openly and honestly about his faith, family, and football. He is a living testimony of how one can thrive in the midst of volatile circumstances. His football story is both fascinating and informative. The only reservation I have about Touchdown Tony is a statement made by one of Nathan’s mentors during his high school years that God would make Tony “a superstar” in exchange for obedience. The assumption that God promises worldly success to anyone who follows Him is unbiblical and should be disregarded. However, the statement does not reflect the tone of the rest of the book which I found to be entertaining, inspiring, and a delight for any football fan. I highly recommend it. I was given a free copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review
