The section on Van Gaal is much stronger, perhaps because he is much more of a personality? It seems Moyes might be more vanilla in real life as well as on the page. The author has a much more literary style than I am used to with newspaper reporters. His writing took some getting used to, but overall is really good.

Good Hunting Book For Some By arizona4570 This book is filled with page after page of hunting and killing, so if you are anti-hunting do yourself a favor and don't read it. I hunt a lot and I had to think back to what it was like back in the 1880s and 1890s, when the hunters shot a lot of game to sell the hides, teeth and tusks to pay for their safari. Back then game was unlimited and no one thought the great herds would ever depleted. Thankfully strict game laws were established and controlled hunting has kept the herds at sustainable levels. The only blights on that picture are the on going civil wars and poaching. The rebels kill elephants and sell the ivory to fund their activities.Getting back to the book, if you'd like to experience what hunting was like in the days of vast herds of game thsi will take you that trip.

He wounds an animal but doesn't always bother to follow it up, others he kills when he seems to already have a sufficiency for his needs. The writing is lacking in excitement, even thrilling encounters are put in blah, straightforward language with Victorian phrasing & sentence structure which can be dreary to read. [Much like Sir Samuel Baker's accounts of his exploits] Neither of them is a Ruark or Capstick!Still, the price was reasonable so if the subject matter interests you, go for it.

Hunting expectations & outcomes beyond belief from today's viewpoint. Nearly every second animal lost, wounded because old fashioned black powder elephant guns frequently take 20 to 35 shots to kill one elephant and some times 3 to 5 shots just to kill an antelope.

Although James Duthie’s daughter had hoped he would write a book featuring princesses, dragons or zebras, you won’t miss them in The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys. Instead Duthie interviews a prophet monkey who predicts games’ outcomes, confesses to the near-homicide of both Walter and Wayne Gretzky, and provides plenty of evidence of his unhealthy obsession with Anna Kournikova. He weighs in on famous athletes like Sidney Crosby, Tiger Woods, Tom Brady and Derek Jeter, and tells his misadventures as a sportscaster, fan, father, husband and son.

The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys: ...And Other Off-the-Wall Stories About Sports...and Life, by James Duthie

Review “I was lucky to survive the day Duthie played in my golf tournament. Little did I know he’d turn that experience into one of the best books on sports that I’ve read in a long time.” (--Wayne Gretzky)

From the Back Cover Praise for James Duthie's The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys:

" I was lucky to survive the day Duthie played in my golf tournament. Little did I know he'd turn the experience into one of the best books on sports that I've read in a long time."

- Wayne Gretzky

"Tragedy is easy. Comedy is hard. Sports comedy is even harder, but James Duthie, who we now know is as comfortable in front of a keyboard as he is a camera, treads whimsically through a sports landscape that certainly needs a smile. His is a biting wit, guaranteed to leave teeth marks."

- Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated

" If you like James Duthie on TSN, you're in for a treat. He's just as clever and witty in print. James is simply a great storyteller whose creative style will make you smile over and over."

- Dave Naylor, The Globe and Mail

"The Quiz sucks but Duthie's book is fantastic. He is one warped writer, but genius."

- John Tortorella, New York Rangers coach

" Duthie writes the way I played: With an edge, but never forgetting the game is supposed to be fun. This book is a ton of fun."

- Jeremy Roenick, former NHL star

"This guy does it all-he writes as well as he does television. That same somewhat aberrant sense of humour leaps off the pages. Sports fans will love this book!"

- Brian Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM

"I don't have kids nor can I legally admit to owning a monkey, but I do love hockey and Duthie manages to make them all work together. He effortlessly modernizes sports writing while respectfully tipping his hat to the old school."

- George Stroumboulopoulos , Hockey Fan and Host of CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight

So what's this book about? Well...

This book is about hockey. And golf. And the Olympic Games. And being a broadcaster, a sports fan, a father, husband, and son. And having an unhealthy fascination with Anna Kournikova.

It's a collection of things that marched through James Duthie's head over the years and spilled out into his weekly columns, selected, collected, and randomized for your reading pleasure. It's also educational!

You'll learn about:

  • Sidney Crosby's secrets
  • Where you rank on The Jeter Meter of male success
  • Why hockey's loser point has to go
  • The best four-legged athlete ever
  • What the clichés that come out of athletes' mouths really mean
  • What it's like to be upstaged by a monkey
  • And yes, how Duthie almost killed two Gretzkys on the same day.

James Duthie has been writing columns about hockey, sport in general, and his own twisted view of the world for over a decade. This book is the first and only collection of some of his most popular and controversial columns, with several brand new, previously unpublished pieces. In The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys, he brings his famous sense of humour, deep hockey knowledge, and his passion for sports of all kinds to fans and readers everywhere- no matter what team you cheer for.

Often hilarious, sometimes insightful, occasionally touching and always passionate, Duthie's off-kilter view of sports and life shows how the spirit of sport unites us all.

About the Author James Duthie is one of North America's most recognized sports media personalities, best known for his hockey broadcasts as the host of The NHL on TSN and for his coverage of the World Junior Championships. He is a regular contributor to TSN.ca (columns and blogs) and hosts TSN's annual NHL Entry Draft coverage and Free Agent Frenzy. He was a national co-host for CTV 's coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

James won the 2009 Gemini Award for Canada's Best Sportscaster, and is an eight-time Gemini nominee. His work has appeared in numerous magazines, including The Hockey News and Today's Parent. Fantastic By Scott Although it was a book with numerous chapters, as opposed to a full story book (which is usually the type of book I prefer), James Duthie worked magic with this one. Every story was incredible, and I finished the book in less than 24 hours -- I literally could not put this book down. With great stories, mixed with uncanny writing ability, Duthie's book should be in the top two or three of every hockey fan's book list (or even sports fan, for that matter).

I loved his sense of humor and his impeccable hockey knowledge. When I saw he'd written a book I knew I had to read it. I was not disappointed. Duthie is a capable writer; funny but also serious when he needs to be. if you know about James Duthie at all this is a great read.

They've learned to compress their thoughts into a set number of words so well that anything longer than that just doesn't seem right.James is not that kind of guy. Great stories combined with great storytelling. Guy sounds like a hoot!
