No coach in NFL history endured more playoff heartache than Marty Schottenheimer. Despite racking up two hundred regular-season victories, Marty never reached the Super Bowl during his coaching career. Martyball! , first published in 2012 and now in paperback for the first time, tells the story of a man who persevered through misfortune and agony that would have brought most men to their knees. But Marty never lost sight of why he fell in love with coaching: he wanted to teach and mold men through the game of football.Based on more than one hundred hours of interviews with Marty, his players, assistants, family, and friends, this book will give readers a look into the mind of an exceptional coach and explain why he never gave up or succumbed to self-pity despite a long streak of bad luck. Get the background on Schottenheimer’s life, from his childhood in rural Pennsylvania to his playing and coaching careers in pro football, and learn why he kept believing in the game he loved—and how he found valuable lessons about life and football beyond each and every loss.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team.Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. This book is an excellent book, a great read and inspiration. It gives you insight into the man not only in football but in his family and personal life. It takes you through his playing career and coaching career. It goes in depth about the Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego years. You learn about the honesty, honor and integrity of the man. You learn about his relationship with owners, General Managers and players. You learn what Martyball really is and always was and remove the misconceptions of what it was. You learn about the man that always put team and organization first. The man that never complained or made excuses for the loses or near misses. The man who never pinned the lose of a game on the player who may have fumbled or missed a field goal. He won as a team and lost as a team. When you stop and think of it were any of the teams better off when Marty was let go or left? Where the Browns, Kansas City, Washington or San Diego? It is remarkable how Marty took woeful teams and resurrected them. His achievements in Cleveland, Kansas City and San Diego are remarkable. In Washington amazing in one year. Going 8 - 3 in the last eleven games of the season.Marty left Kansas City in 1998. They complain that Marty only won three of ten playoff games. Well since Marty left Kansas City has been in a total of 3 playoff games winning none and Dick Vermeil was there for four of those years taking the Chiefs to one playoff game. Marty left Cleveland in 1988 having been to two AFC Championships and six playoff games winning two. Since Marty left Cleveland they have been to five playoff games winning 2 and Bill Belicheck was there for four years. We know what has happen post Marty to date in Washington and San Diego. Each one of the teams Marty coached would love to have those Marty years back. The years of winning football, hard nosed, hard playing teams.Marty never complains about not making it to the Super Bowl or puts blame or points fingers. He doesn't feel sorry for himself or think less of himself. This book is truly inspirational. I was always hooked on Martyball and now more than ever. Since being let go from San Diego I was like a kid waiting for Santa Claus each year to come back waiting for one NFL team to have the sense to bring back Martyball or as it really is, winning ball!

By Rob Bittick I read this book because I am a San Diego Charger fan (since 1969), and I also like Marty Schottenheimer as a NFL head coach. This book goes into his life and career in the NFL. I found the book easy to read and very informative, especially the sections dealing with his time as the Head Coach of the Chargers. This book goes into his character, and his philosophy of coaching, too. For example, he went 14-2 in his last regular season with the Chargers, only to get fired by the owner. He handled the situation with class. Also, my family and I met him once after a Charger summer practice. He was very tired, one could see it in his eyes, but he still took time to meet us and chat a bit. He knew where his priorities were, and meeting Charger fans was a top priority for him at that moment.

By Rich The Reviewer From Marty's rural upbringing in a blue collar family in western penn-sylvania, to his rise in the Pro Football playing ranks of the AmericanFootball league (AFL) 1965 Champion Buffalo Bills, Boston Patriots, Pi-ttsburgh Stealers (some pun intended!) & World Football league Port-land Storm, to a Pro Coaching career that spanned 22.5 seasons.Marty Schottenheimer graduated from Pittsburgh University with anEnglish degree. There is even a chapter on the 2011 UFL season whenMarty lead our Virginia Beach Destroyers to the Championship at theVirginia Beach Sports Plex. On my own talks with Coach Marty during the2011 calender year and Destroyers first season, here are some of my ownobservations, interspersed with what is in the book: Alternate Pro Leagues -WFL, 1974 - Marty told me in the presence of his lovely wife of 44 years, Pat,that he originally signed with the Storm as a LB but a shoulder injury turned himinto a Coach! In 1975 he was hired as LB coach of the New Jersey G-Men (NY Giants). He toldme several funny stories of his scouting reports of the WFL players that got himhired by the Giants. He then left for the Clev. Browns in the late 70's and tookover as H. Coach midway through the 1984 NFL season.AFL, 1965-69 - Marty played LB/STs for the last five years of the American Footballleague's existence before it merged with the NFL as the American Football Conf-erence (AFC, where he coached three NFL teams: Chargers, Chiefs, Browns).UFL,2011-12, Champion Virginia Beach Destroyers. I first met Marty at the Wednesday,March 23rd, 2011 Press Conference in the cramped meeting room of McCormick &Schmick's seafood and steak restaurant in the swanky, upscale Town Centre area ofVirginia Beach, Va. The UFL Commish was there as were (then) several team offici-als. Marty called on me twice when we members of the local Pro Football coveringsports members of the press had questions. Mary's best quote that day, and I'll neverforget it was: "Marty Schottenheimer is here in Virginia Beach to do one thing; win theUFL Championship." And win it they did on Saturday, October 21st, 2011. And I have at-shirt to prove it.More during the 2011 UFL season; post game press conferences [One big reason for theDestroyers winning the UFL title in '11 was the fact that after the season's opening delayof one month, the team roared out of the gate winning it's first three games; the Virginiateam was basically the merger of the troubled leagues Hartford & Florida teams]; Marty, along with QB Chris Greisen, RB Dominic Rhodes and local former Packer/G-Men DBAaron Rouse were a joy to talk to after the games, all four home wins.Oct. 21st, 2011 - "The Championship" Day. As I arrived early for the game, our of the officeearly as to be there for my press pass, pregame meal, et, al, I strolled into the players, coaches, reporters, team officials, et, al entrance and noticed Marty entering with whom I thought mustbe his longtime wife. I said to him, Coach, can I get a picture; of course he pleasantly smiled, then intorduced me to his wife, "Pat, this is Rich Salzer of Sirius Radio.." Wow! I couldn't believehe remembered my name! All year long he and I got along well; contrast that to the jerks from my former Virginian-Pilot,Norfolk, Va paper, colleagues (except for the very fine Paul White, now of the Hampton DailyPress), who ridiculed the team, league all season(s, '11-'12) long, especially Tom Robinson.I reminded the very relaxed Coach Marty S., of what he said back @ McCormick & Schmick'son Wed., Mar., 23rd. He laughed and said, "tonight is what I came back for." After the Destroy-ers convincing 17-3 win over Coach Jim Fassel and the two-time defending Champion LasVegas Locos, a relieved looking Marty Schottenheimer handed me a game ball and I told him,"Congratulations, Coach - long over due [winning a Championship]." "Thanks, Rich.", he told me.In 2012, it all fell apart for Coach Marty, our UFL defending Champion Destroyers and the UFL;Marty left the team four days before the season opener, for what the UFL sited then was "per-sonal" reasons. Earlier in 2012, Sacramento Coach Dennis Green, the ex-Arizona / MinnesotaNFL coach resigned and filed a law suit for breach of contract on over one year overdue coach-ing back pay. It came out later in California court that Marty did the same; he was owed over $1/-Mil.(!) in back pay. His brother, Kurt, 62, a former college QB like myself (I'm 51 now), took over theteam for $1 for the 2012 season, his first Pro H.Coaching job, after 20 yrs., as a former NFL Ast.C.2012...& beyond...The UFL's "fourth" season [2009 lasted 4 teams seven weeks through the Cham-pionship; 2010's 5 teams lasted nine weeks through the Championship; 2011 only six weeks...] lastedonly five weeks; four games plus a bye week for the four teams. Virginia finally lost their only homegame in their season-and-a-half in the UFL, 20-17. As I road down the elevator at the Virginia BeachSports Plex, with a highly eniebreated (SP?) Sacramento owner Paul Pelosi (and his hot daughter), Isensed that this night might be the final curtain call for the Ugly Little Football League. I handed Pelosia business card. He glanced at my ArenaBowl ring and stuffed the card into his pocket. He missed onthe try but got it into the pocket on the second attempt. The next day at the library when I wass puttingout my "Salzer's Sports Report" I-net version, I got a hotmail from Lee Leonard in Sacramento, with alink to the UFL site saying: "The UFL is canceling the rest of the 2012 season, and will continue nextspring (2013) withe 2nd half of it's schedule and will get back to fall pro football in the fal of 2013 withour fifth season."What ended up happening since is that Marty and 138 other coaches and players sued UFL founderBill Hambrecht in Las Vegas court. The jury ruled against Hambrecht and by June he was still yappingabout that "the UFL WAS NOT Dead", and they would return in the future...Fast forward to October2013. There is another UFL type league on the horizon; the National Spring Football League (NSFL).They claim they will be starting up in spring of 2014 with the Virginia Beach Stingrays, with a logo thatlooks very much like the old AIFA Florida Stingrays. And guess where they claim to play? Yep - TheVirginia Beach Sports plex! How I long for the good olde days of the UFL and Martyball! Pick Up OnIt!

I absolutely loved the selection series, even the queen novella and the Heir. Maybe if this had been released at it original date last year before the Heir came out. I'd be more into it. It just felt like another piece to the story but not really necessary. I was so excited for it before and now It was simply something to read just so i'd gotten it out of the way.I'm kind of disappointed really because after so long a wait I just am not in to the story of marlee after the caning. I'm glad I read it. It was ok story. It just felt kind of choppy and not as exciting.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. an enjoyable addition to the Selection series By Carrie G. The Favorite is another companion novella to the Selection series. In this installment we get a behind the scenes look at Marlee and Carter’s relationship told from Marlee’s point of view.I really enjoy these extra looks into the story as I often feel like the main books left out a lot of background information. This one let’s us know how Marlee and Carter met and fell in love and what happens to them after the caning. There were peeks to the events in the main story but adding the extra details makes the story much more appealing to me.Overall, an enjoyable addition to the Selection series, best to be read after finishing The One as it gives hints to the ending of that if you haven’t read it yet.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book explains how Marlee and Carter fall in love and how Prince Maxon saved them from being casted ... By Samantha I always wondered what happened to Marlee during the time after her being caned. This book explains how Marlee and Carter fall in love and how Prince Maxon saved them from being casted as eights by switching their places with other people from the castle. America always thought Maxon did nothing to save Marlee but honestly, he saved her and Carter's life more than once. and he also offered them a home and once he was king allowed them to be the first ones who didn't have a caste. This book was very interesting to read, seeing how someone else viewed the selection and what their out turn was.

Little did the world know that so many so-called “left-handed” golf champions are natural righties – and vice-versa – until now. In The Wrong Side of the Ball, lifelong right-handed golfer Mike Zimmerman explores this phenomenon by taking up left-handed golf himself – and begins an unforgettable personal journey. “The Wrong Side of the Ball is a terrific golf book that begins as a seemingly impossible quest and ends by reminding you what the game of golf is all about.” Josh Karp, Author, Straight Down the Middle and Orson Welles’s Last Movie “Carl Unis, a Wisconsin golf legend and one of the finest gentlemen I’ve ever known, adds a lot to this book. It’s not only a great story, it might just make you a better golfer!” Tom Pipines, Sports Director, WITI FOX6 Milwaukee “The 'wrong’ side of the ball happens to be the right side of the ball in golf. No matter from which side you play, I think you'll find this book entertaining and informative.” Sir Bob Charles, 1963 British Open Champion Author, Left-handed Golf

By Amazon Customer Great story that candidly lays out more than just an experiment of switching from right handed golf to left handed, but reveals a life story. An astonishing effort of both golf and documentation of something very unusual about our unusual game of golf.

I learned about golf as a tradition, not just as a sport. I expected a story about "handed-ness" and perfecting a golf swing--I also got a story about fathers, sons, mentorship, and creating memories for the next generation. Perfect holiday gift for the golfer in the family. Kudos!

Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who's ever been chosen.

That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.

Half the time, Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he starts something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around, wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here--it's their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up.

Carry On - The Rise and Fall of Simon Snow is a ghost story, a love story and a mystery. It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters.

Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell

Review

"Rowell imbues her magic with awe and spectacle. Its a powerful, politically minded allegory about sexual, ethnic and class identity - with a heady shot of teenage lust." ―New York Times Book Review

"It’s a brilliantly addictive, genuinely romantic story about teenagers who can’t be neatly sorted into houses, coping with stress and loss and the confusion of just trying to be who they are. It’s as if Rowell turned the Harry Potter books inside out, and is showing us the marvelous, subversive stuffing inside." ―Time Magazine

"Full of heart and humor, this fantastical tale is a worthy addition to the wizarding-school genre." ―People Magazine"Carry On is the fantasy book I didn’t know I’d been waiting for for years...Rowell’s mystery, magic, and political intrigue is the sexiest love story I’ve read in a long time." ―Julie Beck, for The Atlantic

"The funny, wised-up dialogue, the tumultuous, sweet, and sexy love story― is grade-A Rowell...almost impossible to put down." ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Stock up on copies―this one begs to be reread." ―Booklist (starred review)

"With rock-solid worldbuilding, a sweet and believable romance subplot, and satisfying ending, Carry On is a monumentally enjoyable reading experience. Hand this to fans of Rowell, Harry Potter, love stories, and magic." ―School Library Journal (starred review)

"Carry On is a triumph. Thrilling and sexy, funny and shocking, deeply moving and very, very magical. Trust me, you have never, ever seen a wizard school like this." ―Lev Grossman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Magicians trilogy

“Absolutely captivating.” ―Kirkus (starred review) on Fangirl

“Rowell manages to capture both the wildly popular universe of fanfic and the inside of an 18-year-old's head. Consider me a fangirl of this charming coming-of-age tale.” ―Entertainment Weekly on Fangirl

“A deliciously warm-hearted nerd power ballad destined for greatness.” ―New York Journal of Books on Fangirl

“A funny and tender coming-of-age story that's also the story of a writer finding her voice . . . touching and utterly real.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred review) on Fangirl

“The magic here is cast not with wands but with Rowell's incredible ability to build complex, vivid, troubling and triumphant relationships.” ―Booklist, starred review on Fangirl

“(A) charming coming-of-age novel . . . filled with complex subjects (such as divorce, abandonment, and mental illness) handled in a realistic manner, and the writing effortlessly and seamlessly weaves these threads together.” ―School Library Journal, starred review; Best Fiction Books of 2013, on Fangirl

“As funny as it is embarrassing, and as charming as it is true-to-geek-life . . . Fangirl is a cute and poignant read for fangirls and fanboys of all ages.” ―Tor.com on Fangirl

About the Author

Rainbow Rowell writes books. Sometimes she writes about adults (Attachments and Landline). Sometimes she writes about teenagers (Eleanor & Park, Fangirl and Carry On). But she always writes about people who talk a lot. And people who feel like they're screwing up. And people who fall in love.

When she's not writing, Rainbow is reading comic books, planning Disney World trips and arguing about things that don't really matter in the big scheme of things.

She lives in Nebraska with her husband and two sons.

"Carry On" A Brilliant Spin on Simon and Baz By Indiancoolaide May I just start by saying I came into this book with phenomenally high expectations. I loved "Eleanor and Park" and "Fangirl," but "Fangirl" will always hold a special place in my heart. I fell in love with both Cath and Levi and Simon and Baz. Simon and Baz were a huge part of what made that book work, and reading the little vignettes always read like actual stories. What made me so excited for "Carry On" was the continence of a beautiful story done by an amazing author. If you had asked me before reading this book, I would have said Rainbow Rowell had kind of dug herself into a hole on this one. Everyone who read (and obsessively studied) "Fangirl" like I did knows the general consensus of the story - a clichéd fanfiction done by crazy teenage fangirls (I myself am openly a part of this group) who write stories about a gay wizard and a gay wizard/vampire who controls his urges, in an amalgam of Harry Potter and Twilight. We all know how the story goes, as the little excerpts basically tell the story and we have all seen it before. To have a reader come in with a full summary in their mind of how the story will play out would be a hard starting place for anyone. But Rowell delivers a witty, heart wrenching and nail biting story that kept my heartbeat racing from start to finish. She goes in recognizing the fact that readers know parts of the story, and doesn't delve into development, but rather rushes into the story with full speed ahead, reading like a fan made conclusion to a great series, or the original "Carry On" Cather slaved away on in "Fangirl." The juxtaposition of Simon's naïveté and Baz's false confidence works perfectly, and the sexual tension is always subtly there. I found myself sighing over Baz many times and the original characters of Simon, Baz, the Mage, Penelope and Agatha were a stark contrast to many tropes we see, although Penelope did sometimes read as a more quirky Hermione. The story is not simply about their relationship, though, as they face many problems, primarily the Humdrum and their own fears, both addressed in "Fangirl" as well. This story delivers both plot points and characters never discussed in the original, giving readers familiar with "Fangirl" their fair share of twists and turns. It is beautifully written, I definitely plan on rereading it. It works amazingly as a companion to "Fangirl" and as a stand alone novel, with plot devices that weren't completely transparent, though the introduction may make less sense coming from a newbie to the world of the Mages. The story was wonderfully executed, and lived up to my very high expectations, all while taking the plot in a direction I never saw coming.*As a side note, it is very moving to see a POC character, without that being her full identity. Rowell could have made Penny white, but she didn't, and addresses her "Caucasian" name by simply saying, "Anyone can have that name," and moving on, much like how Park’s identity wasn’t just his race in “Park and Eleanor”. I also appreciate how it did not trivialize Simon and Baz, but made them poignant characters, with real motivations and explanations for their behavior, not just focusing on their sexuality.I really enjoyed "Carry On" and recommend it to anyone who loves the magical escape of a fantastical story.

Fangirl’s protagonist Cath struggled with going away to college, being separated from her twin, and the role that Simon Snow fanfiction played in her new reality. Fangirl featured excerpts of both “canon” Simon Snow, and Cath’s fanfic spin on the global literary phenomenon.Carry On is a full length Simon Snow novel. Simon Snow is similar to another series with a famous boy wizard, but it is wholly original. Carry On takes place during Simon’s eighth year at Watford, a school for magical children. Simon plays a unique role in the World of Mages; he is seen as the Chosen One, who will deliver them from evil. Namely, the Insidious Humdrum, who takes on the form of Simon as an eleven-year-old boy.Simon has a best friend- Penelope, and a girlfriend- Agatha. Simon also has an archnemesis/roommate- Baz. When Baz doesn’t return at the beginning of term, Simon is suspicious. Is he planning something? Tensions are running high at Watford, and there is a divide between the Old Families and people who want social and political reforms. When Baz finally returns at Watford, things are different. Instead of hating Baz, Simon is concerned about his welfare. And instead of wanting to kill Simon, Baz only wants to kiss him. As the World of Mages begins to crumble, Simon and Baz realize that they are stronger as allies than as enemies.I loved this book. I loved everything about it. I loved Simon, and I loved Baz. I especially loved Penelope; she was smart and confident, and her fierce loyalty to Simon was so poignant. I loved the allusions to previous Simon Snow escapades that took place before Carry On; coming into the middle of the story was fascinating. I loved the way that Rowell developed her own language of magical spells by taking snippets of songs and popular phrases. I loved the multiple narrators; everyone has their own perspective, and the whole story wouldn’t have resonated as well if we only had Simon’s point of view. I loved the way that the tension between Simon and Baz built up slowly, so when they finally did come together, it made sense and it felt right.I would absolutely recommend Carry On. I loved the Simon Snow excerpts in Fangirl, and I was so thrilled when Rainbow Rowell announced that she was going to write a Simon Snow novel. I devoured Carry On, and I know that this is a book that I am going to read multiple times. I have an Audible credit in my account, and I am going to use it to buy Carry On- probably as soon as I post this review! My only regret is that this is probably the end of Simon Snow- is receiving the rest of the series too much to ask for?

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. I stayed up all night to finish the book. By Clever Elf Really lovely writing. All the things I love about fan fiction such as a certain disregard for traditional limits as well as the cohesion and beautiful writing of an actual book written by a brilliant author. It is especially good if you have already read Fan girl, but I don't think that would be necessary to really enjoy the book. I would also recommend getting the audio version. The Baz voice is so perfect that I didn't know whether I should burst into laughter or do a little victory dance.

The next plague could be just one flight away By Heather Pearson It's pretty straight forward, you get sick, you visit the doctor, you take the prescribed medicine and you get better. That is, unless you are in a particular Bavarian town where a plague, the Black Death, has reared its lethal head once again.Kommissar Franz Waldbaer is called in to investigate a suspicious death at the remote castle Schloss Winterlock. It soon turns into a murder investigation with links to an unusual outbreak of plague. Waldbaer has to work quickly to solve this case before the illness spreads outside of Bavaria and Germany. This is the very thing that medical researchers are trying to keep ahead of, the recurrence of something long banished, that would spread infinitely fast via today's rapid transit systems. In modern times we've forgotten the horror of mass deaths from disease, and quickly bury thoughts of SARS and avian flues. It would just take one mad man to wreck global havoc. Author John J. Le Beau did a good job of conveying how this very event could possibly happen. Sure, it is unlikely, or is it....I like the character of Kommissar Waldbaer. He is single minded in his determination to solve the entire case, not being satisfied with just finding the culprit in the murder. I do think that it would be enlightening to watch him work, were he real. CIA Agent Hirter does much background work that he shares with Waldbaer. I wish he were more involved in the story, though he worked with the Kommissar in a case in an earlier book in this series, so perhaps he is more fleshed out there. The most fascinating and least understood character in the novel, is the perpetrator of the evil behind the plague deaths. He is certainly egotistical and probably a psychopath. That's all I can say without giving anything away.I enjoyed the story and it's setting. I am left pondering whether this type of scenario is possible/probable. Each book I read is a learning experience. Aside from being entertained, I did learn a bit about Germany and the challenges of maintaining historic properties.

Police Procedural Meets the Plague By Elizabeth Plese A masterful thriller that combines international police procedural with the science and terror of the resurgence of the Black Plague all with the introduction of the CIA into the mix. Great entertainment. A thriller with brains!

0 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Could have been a great book By Jackie Carroll Collision of Centuries has a great storyline and could have been an immensely satisfying police procedural if not for awkward syntax and strange turns of phrase. The dialog is particularly troubling. It catches the eye and makes the reader stumble, and you might even find yourself backing up to get another run at it. Unfortunately, it is what it is and it doesn’t get any better with a second reading. The book’s creative and entertaining plot and well-developed characters make you wonder if a good editor might be able to redeem the book, but it’s probably more than the average editor is willing to take on. I’ll have to pass on future books by this author.

With its iconic stars and gleaming ballparks, baseball has been one of the most captivating forms of modern popular culture. In Expanding the Strike Zone, Daniel A. Gilbert examines the history and meaning of the sport’s tumultuous changes since the mid-twentieth century, amid Major League Baseball’s growing global influence. From the rise of ballplayer unionism to the emergence of new forms of scouting, broadcasting, and stadium development, Gilbert shows that the baseball world has been home to struggles over work and territory that resonate far beyond the playing field.Readers encounter both legendary and unheralded figures in this sweeping history, which situates Major League Baseball as part of a larger culture industry. The book examines a labor history defined at once by the growing power of big league stars—from Juan Marichal and Curt Flood to Fernando Valenzuela and Ichiro Suzuki—and the collective struggles of players working to make a living throughout the baseball world. It also explores the territorial politics that have defined baseball’s development as a form of transnational popular culture, from the impact of Dominican baseball academies to the organized campaign against stadium development by members of Seattle’s Asian American community. Based on a rich body of research along with new readings of popular journalism, fiction, and film, Expanding the Strike Zone highlights the ways in which baseball’s players, owners, writers, and fans have shaped and reshaped the sport as a central element of popular culture from the postwar boom to the Great Recession.

Expanding the Strike Zone: Baseball in the Age of Free Agency, by Daniel A. Gilbert

Review An admirable and convincing attempt to place pro athletes in the wider context of the international struggle for labor rights. --The Boston GlobeIn this deft blend of labor history and cultural studies, Dan Gilbert shows how the history of major league baseball's labor relations policies provide a rich repository of evidence about the full magnitude of the enormous changes that have taken place in the nature of work, consumption, marketing and management in our lifetimes. Carefully researched, engagingly written, and brilliantly conceived, this book shows how the business of baseball is one of those places where the nature of work and reward is learned, legitimated, negotiated and arbitrated. --George Lipsitz, Author of How Racism Takes Place

About the Author Daniel A. Gilbert is assistant professor in the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Pool This book is a very well written, easy to read, highly informative look at baseball as it is today. Gilbert knows his subject backwards and forwards. His many lively anecdotes of baseball greats give clear examples of the issues he is discussing and make his book accessible to any reader interested in the sport--or, for that matter, sports in general. The range of the book is impressive. It covers not only free agency, but also the important leagues in Mexico, Cuba, Japan, and the Dominican Republic that most of us know little about. Read Expanding the Strike Zone for an educated insider's tour of the wide world of baseball today. You will watch your next baseball game with increased understanding and enjoyment.Eugene H. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. You're not supposed to have fun reading a scholarly work... By Michael J. Sacco But Dan Gilbert delivers a lucid and comprehensive look at the complex and varied labor history of professional baseball in such a way that you'll never read the boxscores the same again. Although Gilbert clearly loves the game, he has produced a well-documented and clear-eyed look at the business of US baseball and its relationship with the global game in Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia. He shows how Major League Baseball, like every other transnational entity, is willing to use its power and influence to gain the labor it needs at the lowest price. Whether they are "stealing" Negro League players from their teams in the '50s without compensating team owners, opening youth academies in the Dominican Republic to "develop" desperately poor youth into a lower cost and pliant rookie pool or extorting taxpayers into building sports palaces that they can ill-afford, Gilbert offers a balanced look at how countervailing forces like the Major League Players Association (MLPA) and community activism have shaped and sometimes profited from the development of Major League Baseball as a global, multi-billion dollar industry which still enjoys special protection under US law and remains under the control of a handful of very rich people. I really enjoyed this book and learned many things about this sport that I never knew and have a new understanding of a game I still love, but fell out of love with at the professional level many years ago. Who knows, I may turn a White Sox game on...

Ebook PDF Zalacain el Aventurero (Spanish Edition), by Pio Baroja

Fattorini The Spanish Basque writer Pío Baroja y Nessi is one of those privileged artists whose output has been impervious to the passage of time; his prose, crisp, terse, precise and unsentimental reads today as well as it did when originally published. He was a major influence in Ernest Hemingway, who acknowledged his debt to, and admiration of Baroja in a visit in 1956, shortly before the Spanish writer's death.Baroja was a prolific novelist (more than 100 works) and wrote about many subjects; his formative years of spiritual education in El Árbol de la Ciencia (The Tree of Knowledge, 1911), Spain's past in the trilogy La Tierra Vasca (The Basque Country, 1900-1909), and a vivid and gritty description of life in Madrid's slums in the trilogy La Lucha por la Vida (The Struggle for Life, 1922-1924), that elicited the admiration of John Dos Passos. A part of his output consists of adventure novels like the trilogy La Mar (The Sea), which deals with the exploits of Basque mariners in various undertakings, including slave trading. He also wrote "picaresque" novels (a genre born in Spain in the 16th century) where the hero is a "pícaro", a scoundrel, sometimes quite likable as in the case of Silvestre Paradox, one of Baroja's most vivid characters. Many novels mix history with adventure like Zalacaín el Aventurero (Zalacaín the Adventurer). His more ambitious undertaking in the historic/adventure genre is Memorias de un Hombre de Acción (Memoirs of a Man of Action, 1913–28), a series of 14 novels dealing with Spain 19th century history through the eyes of an Basque politician and insurgent of the time, Eugenio de Aviraneta, whom Baroja claimed as an ancestor. The works of many authors have enjoyed a second life in the movies. Such is the case of Benito Pérez Galdós and Octave Mirbeau, both lucky enough to have attracted the attention of the great Spanish director Luis Buñuel. Baroja did not share this luck; although many of his works read as movie scripts, the nine movies made of them (from 1930 to 1983) seem to have been inconsequential; none is readily available. This Kindle edition of Zalacaín el Aventurero is excellent except that the Table of Contents is not linked to the book, which makes it difficult to access a given chapter or part. I fervently hope that Kindle will publish all of Baroja's work in the near future.

The Fencer and the Zen Body What is a Zen Body? Can Eastern insights help Western fencing? Can there be … a fusion? A blending of disparate elements into a unified and mutually beneficial whole. That’s what Quincy Rabôt has done with fencing and martial arts, fusing Eastern insights with Western scientific understanding of the human body moving in combat. The result: • A new vision of fencing movement that’s based on centuries-old traditions • Eastern imagery supported by Western biomechanics • A way of imagining fencing movements that leads to relaxed, efficient speed and power This is not a book on how to fence. It is a book intended to transform your understanding of how to fence, how you experience your fencing, and how you can convey the essence of fencing to others. A fusion!
