A vicious murder with a broadsword leaves a man dead at a remote and ancient castle in the Bavarian forests. Shortly thereafter, the bubonic plague―a hideous disease believed to be eliminated centuries ago, is detected in Bavaria, killing its victims.  German police Kommissar Franz Waldbaer strongly suspects a link to the castle, but his investigation is impeded by the master of the castle, the arrogant Count von Wintelock. As Waldbaer painfully extracts information from the Count, more people die, and it becomes apparent that the deadly plague is spreading―and fast. Waldbaer and his team of international infectious disease specialists find themsleves on a collision course with a twisted genius who wants to plunge the world into the Dark Ages, leaving millions dead.  To make matters worse, the killer has a terminal disease. With nothing to lose, he accelerates his efforts.

The next plague could be just one flight away By Heather Pearson It's pretty straight forward, you get sick, you visit the doctor, you take the prescribed medicine and you get better. That is, unless you are in a particular Bavarian town where a plague, the Black Death, has reared its lethal head once again.Kommissar Franz Waldbaer is called in to investigate a suspicious death at the remote castle Schloss Winterlock. It soon turns into a murder investigation with links to an unusual outbreak of plague. Waldbaer has to work quickly to solve this case before the illness spreads outside of Bavaria and Germany. This is the very thing that medical researchers are trying to keep ahead of, the recurrence of something long banished, that would spread infinitely fast via today's rapid transit systems. In modern times we've forgotten the horror of mass deaths from disease, and quickly bury thoughts of SARS and avian flues. It would just take one mad man to wreck global havoc. Author John J. Le Beau did a good job of conveying how this very event could possibly happen. Sure, it is unlikely, or is it....I like the character of Kommissar Waldbaer. He is single minded in his determination to solve the entire case, not being satisfied with just finding the culprit in the murder. I do think that it would be enlightening to watch him work, were he real. CIA Agent Hirter does much background work that he shares with Waldbaer. I wish he were more involved in the story, though he worked with the Kommissar in a case in an earlier book in this series, so perhaps he is more fleshed out there. The most fascinating and least understood character in the novel, is the perpetrator of the evil behind the plague deaths. He is certainly egotistical and probably a psychopath. That's all I can say without giving anything away.I enjoyed the story and it's setting. I am left pondering whether this type of scenario is possible/probable. Each book I read is a learning experience. Aside from being entertained, I did learn a bit about Germany and the challenges of maintaining historic properties.

Police Procedural Meets the Plague By Elizabeth Plese A masterful thriller that combines international police procedural with the science and terror of the resurgence of the Black Plague all with the introduction of the CIA into the mix. Great entertainment. A thriller with brains!

Could have been a great book By Jackie Carroll Collision of Centuries has a great storyline and could have been an immensely satisfying police procedural if not for awkward syntax and strange turns of phrase. The dialog is particularly troubling. It catches the eye and makes the reader stumble, and you might even find yourself backing up to get another run at it. Unfortunately, it is what it is and it doesn’t get any better with a second reading. The book’s creative and entertaining plot and well-developed characters make you wonder if a good editor might be able to redeem the book, but it’s probably more than the average editor is willing to take on. I’ll have to pass on future books by this author.

With its iconic stars and gleaming ballparks, baseball has been one of the most captivating forms of modern popular culture. In Expanding the Strike Zone, Daniel A. Gilbert examines the history and meaning of the sport’s tumultuous changes since the mid-twentieth century, amid Major League Baseball’s growing global influence. From the rise of ballplayer unionism to the emergence of new forms of scouting, broadcasting, and stadium development, Gilbert shows that the baseball world has been home to struggles over work and territory that resonate far beyond the playing field.Readers encounter both legendary and unheralded figures in this sweeping history, which situates Major League Baseball as part of a larger culture industry. The book examines a labor history defined at once by the growing power of big league stars—from Juan Marichal and Curt Flood to Fernando Valenzuela and Ichiro Suzuki—and the collective struggles of players working to make a living throughout the baseball world. It also explores the territorial politics that have defined baseball’s development as a form of transnational popular culture, from the impact of Dominican baseball academies to the organized campaign against stadium development by members of Seattle’s Asian American community. Based on a rich body of research along with new readings of popular journalism, fiction, and film, Expanding the Strike Zone highlights the ways in which baseball’s players, owners, writers, and fans have shaped and reshaped the sport as a central element of popular culture from the postwar boom to the Great Recession.

Expanding the Strike Zone: Baseball in the Age of Free Agency, by Daniel A. Gilbert

Review An admirable and convincing attempt to place pro athletes in the wider context of the international struggle for labor rights. --The Boston GlobeIn this deft blend of labor history and cultural studies, Dan Gilbert shows how the history of major league baseball's labor relations policies provide a rich repository of evidence about the full magnitude of the enormous changes that have taken place in the nature of work, consumption, marketing and management in our lifetimes. Carefully researched, engagingly written, and brilliantly conceived, this book shows how the business of baseball is one of those places where the nature of work and reward is learned, legitimated, negotiated and arbitrated. --George Lipsitz, Author of How Racism Takes Place

About the Author Daniel A. Gilbert is assistant professor in the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Pool This book is a very well written, easy to read, highly informative look at baseball as it is today. Gilbert knows his subject backwards and forwards. His many lively anecdotes of baseball greats give clear examples of the issues he is discussing and make his book accessible to any reader interested in the sport--or, for that matter, sports in general. The range of the book is impressive. It covers not only free agency, but also the important leagues in Mexico, Cuba, Japan, and the Dominican Republic that most of us know little about. Read Expanding the Strike Zone for an educated insider's tour of the wide world of baseball today. You will watch your next baseball game with increased understanding and enjoyment.Eugene H. Pool, Belmont, Massachusetts

Sacco But Dan Gilbert delivers a lucid and comprehensive look at the complex and varied labor history of professional baseball in such a way that you'll never read the boxscores the same again. Although Gilbert clearly loves the game, he has produced a well-documented and clear-eyed look at the business of US baseball and its relationship with the global game in Latin America, the Caribbean and Asia. He shows how Major League Baseball, like every other transnational entity, is willing to use its power and influence to gain the labor it needs at the lowest price. Whether they are "stealing" Negro League players from their teams in the '50s without compensating team owners, opening youth academies in the Dominican Republic to "develop" desperately poor youth into a lower cost and pliant rookie pool or extorting taxpayers into building sports palaces that they can ill-afford, Gilbert offers a balanced look at how countervailing forces like the Major League Players Association (MLPA) and community activism have shaped and sometimes profited from the development of Major League Baseball as a global, multi-billion dollar industry which still enjoys special protection under US law and remains under the control of a handful of very rich people. I really enjoyed this book and learned many things about this sport that I never knew and have a new understanding of a game I still love, but fell out of love with at the professional level many years ago. Who knows, I may turn a White Sox game on...

Ebook PDF Zalacain el Aventurero (Spanish Edition), by Pio Baroja

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding Spanish writer By H. O. Fattorini The Spanish Basque writer Pío Baroja y Nessi is one of those privileged artists whose output has been impervious to the passage of time; his prose, crisp, terse, precise and unsentimental reads today as well as it did when originally published. He was a major influence in Ernest Hemingway, who acknowledged his debt to, and admiration of Baroja in a visit in 1956, shortly before the Spanish writer's death.Baroja was a prolific novelist (more than 100 works) and wrote about many subjects; his formative years of spiritual education in El Árbol de la Ciencia (The Tree of Knowledge, 1911), Spain's past in the trilogy La Tierra Vasca (The Basque Country, 1900-1909), and a vivid and gritty description of life in Madrid's slums in the trilogy La Lucha por la Vida (The Struggle for Life, 1922-1924), that elicited the admiration of John Dos Passos. A part of his output consists of adventure novels like the trilogy La Mar (The Sea), which deals with the exploits of Basque mariners in various undertakings, including slave trading. He also wrote "picaresque" novels (a genre born in Spain in the 16th century) where the hero is a "pícaro", a scoundrel, sometimes quite likable as in the case of Silvestre Paradox, one of Baroja's most vivid characters. Many novels mix history with adventure like Zalacaín el Aventurero (Zalacaín the Adventurer). His more ambitious undertaking in the historic/adventure genre is Memorias de un Hombre de Acción (Memoirs of a Man of Action, 1913–28), a series of 14 novels dealing with Spain 19th century history through the eyes of an Basque politician and insurgent of the time, Eugenio de Aviraneta, whom Baroja claimed as an ancestor. The works of many authors have enjoyed a second life in the movies. Such is the case of Benito Pérez Galdós and Octave Mirbeau, both lucky enough to have attracted the attention of the great Spanish director Luis Buñuel. Baroja did not share this luck; although many of his works read as movie scripts, the nine movies made of them (from 1930 to 1983) seem to have been inconsequential; none is readily available. This Kindle edition of Zalacaín el Aventurero is excellent except that the Table of Contents is not linked to the book, which makes it difficult to access a given chapter or part. I fervently hope that Kindle will publish all of Baroja's work in the near future.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful.
