Whether they are spirits of the departed or figments of an overactive imagination, ghosts are a staple in fiction. Storytellers have portrayed ghosts as scary, friendly, or annoying across many genres. Now, eight authors offer their own interpretations of ghosts through a collection of short stories that will appeal to fans of horror, fantasy, or young adult fiction. “Deathwatch” by Katie French - Teenage sisters Charlotte and Georgie stumble into a robbery, and their normal life gets flipped upside down. Worse, when the clerk kills one of the robbers, his face is covered in a supernatural swarm of bugs. Charlotte must be hallucinating. It's the only explanation for the terrible things she's seen. Everyone calls the clerk a hometown hero, but Charlotte's not so sure. Then a dead girl appears in her mirror with clues to the truth, and Charlotte learns there's more horror to this world than she ever expected. “Tides” by Sarah Dalton - Andrea wakes with sand on her feet. She is sleepwalking down to the sea every night, but remembers little more than a vague recollection of a boy who lives on the beach. With an absent father and a mother who would rather walk along the coast than look after her daughter, Andrea struggles to get by. She’s haunted, but from a memory, or a spirit? “Shadowspirit” by M.A. George - On a good day, Henta Mourngard is stalked by dreadspirits and netherphantoms, a living magnet for creatures of the afterlife. On a bad day, she finds herself communing with a demon of the underworld—worse yet, interrogating one—in a desperate attempt to track down the shadowspirit who has been her guide since infancy. Demons don’t take kindly to interrogation. And the search for a missing shadowspirit leads to places the living daren’t tread (lest they no longer qualify as living). ‘Tis unfortunate for Henta that today is not a “good day”. “The Little Girl” by Jamie Campbell - Sixteen-year-old Penny is moving house… again. Starting out in a small town, she is hopeful this time will be the last. As long as the little girl doesn’t follow her, she will be rid of her past hauntings. The only problem is, the little girl won’t let her go and now she is about to grow stronger than ever before. “The Ghost Below” by Ariele Sieling - White Rabbit gets sent to run cables in the bowels of the spaceship as a punishment. While working, she discovers that the ship's ghost might be more than he seems. “Slave Runner” by H.S. Stone - Malika and her sister are captured by slave traders but receive an unexpected gift of freedom when their captors encounter a deadly gathering of ghosts. The sisters escape to a nearby village, where they learn that the new sanctuary isn’t as safe as they thought it would be, and ghosts aren’t what they most need to fear. “Farewell Ohana (A Ghostly Mini-Wave)” by Sutton Shields - Maile Lahela is under attack by someone in the Kauai Camp for the Curiously Creepy. When she awakens one morning unable to see, her peculiar, yet loyal friends decide it’s time to escape the institution—something that’s never been done. But before they can leave, Maile has a mission of her own…one that could cost them their lives. Farewell Ohana is a short, fun-filled, emotional prequel to the events occurring in Overfalls, Wave Two of The Merworld Water Wars series by Sutton Shields. “Ghost Girl” by Susan Fodor - Zoey Saunders has her future mapped out, but an accident brings her life to an untimely end. In her new state of being, Zoey feels compelled to seek justice for her death and bring healing to her family who have become a shadow of their former selves. But what constitutes justice and will getting even ever be enough to replace the life she lost?

The anthology was well put together, and I read some authors I have not read before. Some great characters and innovative tales. My favorites were The Little Girl by Jamie Campbell, The Ghost Below by Ariele Sieling, and Ghost Girl by Susan Fodor. None of them were tired old ghost stories. They were unique and had creative endings. Well done.

By Abby Normal This had some great ghost stories to it and I felt it to have a high proportion of good vs bad ones. It's a quick read for those who don't have a lot of time to sit and spend hours on a book, yet it's not so short you feel like there was nothing to enjoy.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Collection of all the novellas/bonus scenes - This is not a new book in the series!!! By featherlashes Not sure why I thought this was going to be another installment in the series. Just a heads up...it's not. Happily Ever After is a compilation of all the novellas and bonus scenes/epilogues in The Selection series and if you are up-to-date with reading the series then you have already read most of these. Die hard fans will likely love this one-stop shop for all the extras but I could have done without it. Don't mind me, just a little disgruntled. I should have read the synopsis first. Lesson learned. The Prince (with the two bonus chapters):★★★★☆Novella #0.5. This is basically the first 1/3 of The Selection from Prince Maxon's point of view. I liked that it showed the stressors Maxon has to deal with, his relationship with his parents, and his personal thoughts about the selection process and the girls. The Guard:★★★☆☆The Guard is a novella (#2.5) in author Kiera Cass's The Selection series. In the series, the female lead is America Singer who is torn between two loves in her life, Maxon and Aspen. Maxon's perspective is shared in the novella The Prince, and Aspen's perspective is shared in this novella. I have enjoyed the series overall and although I thought The Prince novella was unnecessary, it was interesting being inside Maxon's head. However, after reading The Guard, I almost wish I wasn't exposed to Aspen's point-of-view. There's a difference between a man being in love and a boy being in love and Aspen appears to be the latter. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this. Actually, there's a certain type of sweetness to being oblivious to everything except your heart's desire. But America is no longer a girl who has this luxury. She has grown and has been exposed to the complexities in her world and her eyes are now on more pressing matters. I've been Team Maxon since book one and that hasn't changed for me, especially after reading this book. The Queen:★★★★☆The Queen is a prequel novella (#0.4) in Kiera Cass's young adult, dystopian series titled: The Selection Series. This short story features Maxon's father and mother, King Clarkson and Queen Amberly, and includes the story of how they met through their generation's selection process. I think most readers don't like King Clarkson in The Selection Series, so I was curious if he would be portrayed any differently during his younger years as prince. The answer is...Nope. I have to admit though, Ms. Cass was much more subtle in her character development of Clarkson, but his need to control and his hard-handed threats are still shown through his interactions with others in this prequel. The cycle of violence rings loud and clear within the portrait of this royal family, but any suggestion that Clarkson is a victim rang on deaf ears with me. Amberly is the perfect little submissive, which is something I didn't really view her as in the series, but maybe I just forgot. Through Amberly's point of view, the two of them have a very promising future together, and they may very well be just what each other needs. The Queen gives quite a bit of insight into these two characters, and when compared to the series, does a great job of reinforcing the fairytale aspect of Maxon and America's love story. This novella is a wonderful addition to the series and I would recommend it to fans. The Favorite:★★★☆☆The Favorite is a novella (#2.6) in Kiera Cass's young adult, dystopia series titled The Selection. This short-story was a refreshing addition from Marlee's point of view. The characters in this series are great, but sometimes it's nice to read a new perspective...and see a new love story. If you have read the series then you know that Marlee falls in love with a guard: Carter and when discovered, they are caned as punishment. But Marlee's POV provides insight into a beautiful bond between two people that gets them through the hard times. I found the novella rather choppy and it didn't flow well in my opinion but the content was good. Three stars.Three scenes from Celeste’s POV:★★★☆☆Wow, so Celeste isn't the cold-hearted b*itch I thought she was. She's still a stuck-up snob who will do anything to be first but she is a bit complex like we all are. Can't say I like her character but I didn't mind reading these few scenes from her perspective.Lucy’s scene (bonus scene from The One):★★☆☆☆This is a tiny little scene from the maid Lucy's perspective. If this was a deleted scene collecting dust, then I see why Ms. Cass wanted to eventually offer it to readers but I certainly wouldn't have sought out Happily Ever After just for this. The bonus epilogue:★★☆☆☆Another tiny piece that gives fans a peek of their favorite characters' after the ending of The One. Again, it didn't really do anything for me but I'm sure there are some fans out there that will just squeal with joy at any little bit that extends the story for them.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. ... By Megan So, as always, I made another horribly fantastic decision. Downside-I'm getting five hours of sleep tonight. Upside-this book was flawless. I feel like I finally have the closer I needed about most characters, and the only way Kiera Cass could have done better is by writing the whole series from Maxon's point of view :) Hurry up, book five!

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. If you're skeptical, buy it! It's worth it! By Akneman I was so excited when I saw this "prequel"/companion novel was releasing. Of course, I thought it was just the Prince, the Guard, and then the Queen and the Favorite in it with some extra pages with maps of Illea and author notes back then. Nevertheless, I still bought it because, um, hello!--it's still a Selection book! I was pleasantly surprised to find that I enjoyed (read: loved) this a lot more than I thought I would. It gives so much more insight to Marlee, Carter, Maxon, Aspen, Lucy, Celeste, Clarkson, and Amberly. You get to see scenes taking place that America never saw and what the other characters seemed to think about certain events and America, which is really cool. There's also a lot more to it than I gave it credit for! I mean, I think it's the biggest book of the series yet. It truly is a "must have companion"!! And besides... the bonus epilogue to The One is so sweet that it's worth buying just to read that part. I mean, c'mon, we all don't mind reading a bit more from America's perspective! ;)

NOT AN ORDINARY LIFE is the compelling and adventurous autobiography of Les Hody. This remarkable life story unfolds in Hungary, a country caught up in frightening political and social issues during the 1940's and 50’s. His early life was one of privilege, but this changed quickly and Les and his family were declared "enemies of the state". Yet through incredible determination and endurance Les reached the pinnacle of basketball success and popularity. At the peak of his sporting prowess and despite his status as a European champion and Olympian, Les was forced to escape Hungary during the 1956 uprising against communism, facing an uncertain future as a refugee. His steel will and adaptability enabled him to succeed and triumph as an Olympian once again, this time for his adopted country of Australia. Anecdotes of ambition, hope and courage enliven the bleak backdrop of his impoverished circumstances as he sought to establish a new life in Australia, finally finding peace in his religious faith. Agnes Zillner OAM *** I am grateful for the work Les Hody has put in to write his biography. He dedicates much of his story to his basketball experiences, but the way in which he describes life in Hungary during those dreadful years of his youth and the way in which he describes his family, his business ventures, his love for his brother, John and his conversion to Christianity, is a story that could easily be attracted to a Hollywood film maker. It is a story that despite the odds has a happy ending. Lindsay Gaze OAM *** 'Not an Ordinary Life' is packed full of anecdotes, some funny and uplifting, others sometimes brutal and sad spanning eighty years of Les Hody's life. By taking risks and never looking back he has certainly lived an extraordinary life. Melanie Zuben, Author

Not an Ordinary Life: From class enemy to the hall of fame and a lifetime in between, by Laszlo Hody

About the Author I have faced countless challenges throughout life, but writing my life story ranks high on the list. It has truly been a labour of love. The Hody family experienced two world wars and two revolutions. Throughout that time the face of Europe changed dramatically. New countries were created by land annexations and some old ones disappeared. Our forefathers enjoyed a few decades of peace but far more periods of war and dictatorship. Hungary, a proud and self sufficient country for the previous 1100 years, was annexed in 1918 after World War I and consequently lost two thirds of its land and sixty five percent of its population. This was the landscape where my family carved out an existence, always adapting to changing circumstances. Many of them experienced upheaval, injustice and torture, but also enjoyed wealth and prosperity. Since the age of eighteen I have traveled the world many times, visited seventy-eight countries on all continents as a sportsman, businessman and later as a semi retiree. I have lived in three; Hungary, Australia and New Zealand. I was also the first male athlete in the modern Olympics to represent two different countries; Hungary in 1952 at the Helsinki Games and Australia in 1964 in Tokyo. In addition, I was selected to play in additional Olympics; the Hungarian National Basketball Team at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, the Australian National Team in 1960 Rome, and again in 1968 at the Mexico City Games. Unfortunately, much to my disappointment, I missed out on participating for a combination of political, bureaucratic and economic reasons completely out of my control. The Hungarian National team won silver at the European Championships in Moscow in 1953, gold in the World University Championship in 1954 in Budapest finished on top of the European Basketball Championships in 1955. Had I lived in a different era I most probably would have had a longer and more successful career. In addition to sport, I've tackled trades, had numerous businesses, and lived at more addresses than I can possibly remember. The school of life offers many courses, but it is in the difficult classes that we learn the most about who we really are.

This memoir is an astonishing record of courage, starting from communist Hungary. Written with sensitivity and clarity, Les bares his soul, his entrance into the world of sport and his iron determination to become a great Olympian, representing his much loved adopted country: Australia. By the time I reached the final page, I felt like cheering.

Ethan Conners is an upper-crust, Orthodox Jewish academy senior who's also the toughest high school hockey defenseman in Illinois, and he's landed an NCAA scholarship to prove it. But Ethan never wanted Team USA to select him for the summer Maccabiah Games in Israel. Now, Ethan's forced to trade a lazy July and angry girlfriend for a shabby ice rink near Kiryat Shemona, and a maniacal coach programmed for victory at all costs. And boarding with a gritty, Israeli family is anything but five-star. Ethan so wants to be done with this tournament and reclaim his social scene in Chicago. But everything changes when American privilege battles a rugged week of Israeli border town hardship. Suddenly, Ethan's stressing over his cushy hockey scholarship, while his new Israeli peers face three-year stints defending the Jewish State. And when Ethan catches the eye of a sabra girl with shocking ties to Chicago, his life's about to change forever, as he's forced to make a gut-wrenching choice between his dreamy, college free-ride, or the ultimate, Jewish line change.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fast Read and Very Enjoyable By Robert S. Lichtenfeld The book was well written and at the end of every chapter I couldn't wait until I read the next one. I liked the style and since my family are hockey fans I was enthralled at the descriptions. The romance was very nice and it showed that an orthodox boy can have secular interests.

When Phil Tufnell hung up his cricket boots back in 2003, little did he know the dramatic direction his professional life would take next.Yet since being crowned "King of the Jungle" in I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here, the ex-England spin bowler has never looked back and is now a much loved television and radio presenter. Cricket's dressing-room clown is now broadcasting's joker in the pack. Whether it's dining on kangaroo testicles on I'm a Celebrity, displaying his fleckle in the ballroom on Strictly Come Dancing, keeping a straight face while presenting a short item on the history of whistles for The One Show, causing weekly mayhem for the long-suffering host Sue Barker on A Question of Sport, or simply chewing the fat about his beloved cricket on Radio 4's Test Match Special, millions and millions enjoy Tuffers' lust for life and endearing sense of humour, much of it self-deprecating.In Where Am I?, Phil gamely tries to make sense of the wonderful roller-coaster he has been riding these last dozen years, delighting fans with a treasure trove of wonderful stories about the places he has been, the people he has met, the "things" he has been asked to do but - most of all - the sheer enormous joy he has had doing it all.
