It is 1648, a small village in the Alps: In the thick of a blizzard,a town priest discovers he's been poisoned. As numbness creeps up his body, he summons the last of his strength and scratches a sign in the frost that will lead the town hangman, his daughter, and the town physician in pursuit of a treasure of the Knights Templar. But the priest's murderer is already on their trail, and he's not the only one after the legendary fortune: a dark monk is not far behind, and a band of thieves is roving the countryside, attacking solitary travelers and spreading panic. The race is on, and the stakes are high.

Delivering on the promise of his first book, Oliver Pötzsch takes readers on a whirlwind tour through the occult hiding places of Bavaria's ancient monasteries, bringing to life the compassionate hangman - who's destined to join the ranks of literature's most beloved characters.

The Dark Monk is a fantastic follow up to The Hangman's Daughter. Again, he brings the world of Jakob Kuisl, the hangman of Schongau, vividly to life. His characters are well crafted, the story is a maze of mystery and intrigue with a dash of romance. I adore Magdalena, Jakob's daughter. She is a passionate, intelligent woman who I admire for her strength of character. Her lover Simon, the town doctor, is certainly a more interesting character because of her presence in his life. If not for her, he'd be just another small town doctor who cares far too much for his appearance. She gives him depth, and he gives her an ounce of respectability, which is virtually impossible for a woman in her social position in that time period. Being the daughter of the hangman was certainly a fact that made people fear her, and gave her little options in life. Her relationship with Simon really mixes things up a bit in this story, especially when the beautiful Benedikta Koppmeyer arrives in town. This story centers on the murder of a priest, and the confounding clues he leaves behind. We are swept into the world of the Knights Templar, their secrets and mysteries that have made them so fascinating throughout history, are laid bare here, and are center stage in this well crafted tale.I look forward to further installments in the Hangman's Daughter series. Thank you Mr. Potzsch, for creating these fascinating characters! This is truly a 5-star success!

A fun but not convincing tale By loce_the_wizard Oliver Pötzsch used the motif of the mystery novel and applies it to "The Dark Monk: A Hangman's Daughter Tale," set in 1660. It's winter with a capital "W" in the Bavarian Alps. The story takes us and his characters from village to village with excursions through the countryside and to a series of monasteries. The plot is set in motion when a poisoned priest uses his dying wits and strength to leave a clue that proves a gateway into a bigger mystery, drawing in the stalwart trio of hangman, executioner, and healer Jakob Kuisl; his somewhat stubborn but attractive daughter Magdalena; and the town physician's son who is a bit of a dandy but smart as a whip, Simon. But while this mystery is the story's center, other events are also crucial, chiefly, a group robbers are preying on travelers, particularly merchants and their cargos, and a deadly illness is killing many of the villagers.Along with the murdered priest's sister, this group follows a trail of various clues and riddles, each leading to more answers and more questions. Tracking this core group is a trio of murderous monks (not sure which one is actually the dark monk of the title), various church leaders, and another trio of soldiers-for-hire. As you might imagine, murder, mayhem, kidnapping, and so forth ensue. The story seems as though the scenes were staged for a play or graphic novel with characters tripping over each other in unexpectedly places. I thought that the plot and resolution hinged on a series of increasingly unlikely coincidences playing out and bringing the characters back together in, for me, an ultimately unsatisfactory resolution. In other words, my "willing suspension of disbelief" could only go so far before I felt like the author was winking at me instead of making the story really resolve itself.I thought "The Dark Monk: A Hangman's Daughter Tale" was a fun but not convincing tale. The characters seemed a bit cartoonish to me, the settings a bit too sketchy, and the plot a bit too twisted.

Fun and addictive to read By Lucky Clucker When I read some of the reviews of the first book in this series (The Hangman's Daughter) I was both intrigued and worried. It sounded like an interesting period to set a mystery-type series, but some of the reviewers seemed to think the book was both anachronistic and ahistorical in certain ways. That may have been true of the first book (I can't say, as I haven't yet read it) but it certainly isn't true of this one.I found The Dark Monk to be fast-paced and interesting without sacrificing the feel of the era in which the story is set. The pace of actual events may take place at 17th century speed, but the interactions and descriptions of the various character's mental workings was very well-written and entertaining. The book has several interesting characters and you get to hear the story from their point of view in different chapters. The main characters are Jakob (the hangman), Magdalena (his daughter) and Simon (what passes for a doctor in the 17th century).Jakob is the kind of iconoclastic detective I'm a real sucker for. He is going to do things his own way and ultimately will rely chiefly on his own counsel, even though he allows Simon and Magdalena brief glimpses into what is going on in his head.Simon is the kind of character who you alternately like, pity, despise, and then like again. He can be vain and flawed, but he also realizes his short comings and exhibits humanity during a period of time when people had to scratch and claw 24/7 just to keep going.Magdalena alternates between fierce pride that she is the hangman's daughter and dangerous despair that her position in her village will prevent her from having what she wants in life-- namely, Simon. The murder is grisly enough and the intrigue is fun and involves Templar Knights-- what could be better than Templars and treasure?!I laughed out loud several times and really enjoyed the voice the author employs when writing as Jakob. The humor is dry and sophisticated while still maintaining an earthy tone.Is it likely that these type of folks would have books (exceedingly rare for even those in the highest of social circles) and have the leisure and ability to actually read them? The writing is so good that I can stretch disbelief far enough to believe it. I also believe the humor and slang in the book are representative of the time. "The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel," was written over 100 years earlier than the time this book is supposed to be set and it contains similar bawdy and sly humor.I loved this book and I will be buying the first book in this series. If you enjoy the murder mystery genre and have books by authors like Cruz-Smith, Nesbo, and Chandler on your shelf I think you will like this one, too.

Carlos Fehr. Paris, Francia.

Treading Clams is a young man's memoir of growing up in a small seaside town at the end of the Second World War. Like the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, John "The Crabber" White takes us on eight different life changing adventures across an all American landscape from clamming in the Great South Bay to betting the horses at Yonkers Raceway to a kill or be killed adventure on a hunting trip deep in the Adirondack mountains. The Crabber reminds us of a more romantic time in American history when "boys will be boys" and children grew up unsupervised on the streets and back lots of small town America. Born and raised in Bay Shore, Francis Bennett transports you back to the heart and soul of small town Long Island in the 1950's. (From an interview with The Bookbag.co.uk) "You've said that the location of the stories is fictional but it does seem very real. Is it loosely-based on any particular place? Does it relate back to your childhood?" “The location of the stories is Bay Shore, L.I., New York, the town where I grew up. The fictional disclaimer at the beginning of the book is there as a matter of form since I fictionalized a very real place. All of the characters are based on actual people who populated my boyhood but I portrayed them with some literary license. I loved them all. I remain grateful to them for all they did for me simply because of who they were.”

As with the last book I was did not want to stop reading. I must say though this one was bitter sweet in my opinion but as I told you I will not judge you.I am happy that you made it this far in life considering what you have been through. The main thing is that you are aware, acknowleged and acted which is a great trait. You are amazing. I am certain you will inspire others the way you did me. Weber Perhaps not what you would expect -- it's not about scoops and how they are turned up from one of hockey's top reporters. This is a book about hockey and how it dominates the lives of so many, and in so many special ways. You feel better after reading it!

How do we know that God loves baseball? Because everywhere you look there are baseball fields and stadiums. Obviously when God made dry ground and separated it from the waters He had in mind the building of baseball diamonds. "In the Big Inning God Created Baseball" matches stories of the stars of baseball with those of Biblical heroes found in scriptures. The book points out how baseball and the Bible compliment each other in many ways. The reader will see how daily living can be better and more enjoyable by following the rules of the game. "In the Big Inning God Created Baseball" is entertaining as well as informative. By using quotes from famous baseball stars of the past and present the message contained is made more enjoyable. Yogi Berra said, "If people don't want to come to the ball park, how are you gonna stop them?" To enjoy baseball you don't have to go to the ballpark, just pick up this book and start reading. Intricate details are explained in the book like how to catch a knuckleball, one of baseball's most unpredictable pitches. Bob Uecker says the way to do that is to "wait until the ball stops rolling and pick it up." Rain delays are a part of baseball but none lasted as long as the one Noah experienced in the Bible. 40 days and nights of rain is a mighty big delay. You'll want to read about what happened on one particular Easter Egg hunt at Major League game held by the players for their kids. The significance of Easter is evident in the scripture lessons in this book as well. Sometimes life throws you a curve ball, but by reading "In the Big Inning God Created Baseball" you will hit it out of the park."

An absolute gem By Friends Of Film Rice and Williams pair up in "50/50" to bring us the best Super Bowl stories and insight the sports world has known...it's the type of book that you can open to any page and enjoy. Originally purchased as a coffee-table book for the man-cave, this title is getting its money worth in pre-game looks alone from the Sunday get-togethers with the guys. Need a Christmas present for the football fan(s) in your life? Look no further than this title. Two (very) enthusiastic thumbs up

This is a very exciting book - full of statistical details, high quality pictures and descriptive information about games and plays I never knew about. Hearing the exciting plays, the teams and player comments about Super Bowls past, gave me a new perspective of the all time loved and most anticipated game of each year. As a woman who loves the game, I look forward to many more books written by Randy O. Williams and other NFL pros.-S. Silveira (Tracy, CA)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great Read! Highly Recommended! By Jim Glen I would highly recommend 50 years, 50 Moments as a great historical read of the first 50 Super Bowls played. Everybody knows the scores and stats of most of the games played but what this book gives you are insights from former players, coaches, and owners that you will not get elsewhere. Jerry Rice and Randy Williams have literally beat the bushes to track down these people who give the reader a first person perspective of everything that transpired during the many Super Bowls played over the years. You will relive the greatest plays in history from players like Starr, Bradshaw and Brady to name a few. There are also some not so greatest plays that will come back to you after reading this book such as Garo Yepremian's ill-fated pass attempt in Super Bowl VII. A great non-play highlight would be the game winning drive for SF in Super Bowl XXIII and Joe Montana calling plays as well as giving a John Candy sighting while in the huddle. Again, this book has it all and I would highly recommend it! Sacramento, CA.

“Gitanjali” is one of Rabindranath Tagore’s best known works for which he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Many of the verses in Gitanjali are beautiful prayers written after a gut-wrenchingly painful period in Rabindranath Tagore’s life, during which he lost his father, wife, daughter and a son in quick succession. His unfathomable pain and unshaken devotion to God are captured in the moving prose-verses of Gitanjali, which Tagore dedicated as “Song Offerings”.

The work was originally written in Bengali published over different Bengali books on poetry from where 103 poems have been picked, compiled and consolidated in this book. The translation has been done from Bengali to English by Rabindranath Tagore himself. Gitanjali in literal meaning denotes an offering of a handful of songs.Gitanjali when was released first in August 1910, just one day before the date that became our Independence Day later (15th August). And then Gitanjali made Rabindranath Tagore the first non-European to win a Nobel for Literature in 1913. The book shook the whole world and placed India, Rabindranath Tagore and Gitanjali on international arena of literature. These poems are only numbered, not titled. Hence each poem brings a different meaning to each of its reader without getting drifted away by the preconception got generated by reading a title. Each of the poem is thought provoking, intriguing, deeply meaningful and motivational. These poems in Gitanjali are building blocks of anyone within. You read a poem post which it forces you to interrogate yourself, discuss it with yourself to get deeper and deeper to conclude it.In poem no XXXVI Tagore seems to be interacting/ conversing with God telling to accept his prayer to him and fill in the unfilled portion within his heart. Tagore prays to God to give him strength to absorb his joys and sorrows faced in life and not to get drifted away by them. He further adds to his prayer to God to shower his blessings so that love becomes meaningful in life.

First published in 1846, it was lauded by the influential critic Vissarion Belinsky as being socially conscious literature, who (among others) hailed him as the new Gogol. This book was partly inspired by Nikolai Gogol's short story The Overcoat, whose male protagonist is also a copy clerk. This novel is written in the form of letters of correspondence between the two main characters. Like "The Overcoat", the novel gives a profound account of the lives of low income Russians in the mid-nineteenth century.

Poor Folk (Annotated with Biography), by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

About the Author Dostoyevsky wrote intensely psychological and spiritual novels that formed part of the foundation of existentialism. Along with other liberal intellectuals, he was arrested in 1849 and sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted, and he was exiled in Siberia for four years, followed by five years of mandatory service in the army. When he emerged from his long ordeal he faced financial problems, depression, and an addiction to gambling and wrote his most important novels.

Anyone wanting a quality version who comes across this should get it, especially considering the price. As for the book itself, as Fyodor Dostoevsky's first novel, it is certainly not on par with his later masterworks, but enough of his genius was already present to make it essential for fans, while its many and substantial differences from more representative work may well mean that those who usually dislike him will be pleasantly surprised. It is most immediately interesting as a rare example of a novel told entirely in letters. This is hard to pull off convincingly, and Dostoevsky does admirably, especially for a debut. He manages to put across a wealth of characterization and sketch a vivid background in the limited format. The former is particularly notable; psychological characterization is of course what he was later known for, and it is already present to a great extent. Alternating first-person narration gives great insight into the two main characters, who are memorable and themselves and also noteworthy as fairly representative examples of impoverished mid-nineteenth century Russians. The latter is also well-done; we get an astonishingly vivid sense of what it was like to live in this unenviable time and place in every aspect from landscape to speech. The only complaint one could make here is applicable only to technical purists; Dostoevsky never really justifies the setup. The two characters live across from each other, and though a few visits are noted in passing, it seems highly implausible that they would have to resort to writing so often, though the great verisimilitude of the letters themselves largely makes amends. There is almost no plot in the conventional sense, but we learn more and more about the characters' daily lives and relationship to each other. This is a sort of love story, and the end, while ostensibly happy for Barbara, is tragic for Makar. We may even have to rethink the former's character, as she abandons a man who not only truly cared for her but made her the beneficiary of numerous acts of charity and kindness when he could hardly afford it. Though written before Dostoevsky's Christian conversion, such noble acts and consequent self-abnegation form key parts of later works in a more spiritual sense. Here they show humanity's admirable side, especially in contrast to some of the other characters' actions. Above all, though, the book is valuable for giving a stark account of just how atrociously the lower classes lived. That such suffering existed in an ostensibly modern country so recently will be a true eye-opener for many; the wretchedness is truly great. Those who for decades championed - and in fact still champion - Czarist Russia as a beacon of liberty and equality in light of the Soviet Union's admitted horrors should read this; it gives an excellent indication of what was wrong with Czarist Russia and why it cried out for reform. This unsurprisingly leads to much pathos, and the book is highly emotional in other ways; it indeed often reaches such a fever pitch that many will cry, which shows how little this resembles later Dostoevsky. The philosophical dramatization he was later known for is absent, as is lengthy dialogue. Poor is clearly an early work for this and other reasons, primarily because his originality had yet to arise; it was written under the great influence of Nikolai Gogol, particularly "The Overcoat," and Dostoevsky was indeed first championed as the new Gogol. He became something very different, but this early production is more than worthy - required for fans and worth looking into for many others.

MULLIGAN 1844 St Petersburg Russia the first novel by Dostoyevski and a HUGE success for this unknown working class author. This should be required reading in every High School.Makar Alekseyevich Devushkin 47 year old clerk living in abject poverty (he lives in a section of the kitchen!). The other tenants include the Gorshkovs who are so poor their son is constantly groaning in hunger! Because of his shy nature he is a target for the office bullies,Varvara Alekseyevna Dobroselova his 2nd cousin, twice removed, who lives on the same street also in poverty. Barbara (in my translation) Dobroselova is the one ray of light in Makar Devushkin,s world where he escapes his wretched living conditions in the books he so loves. Barbara father has died after losing his job and becoming a violent drunk, She and her severly depressed mother live with the abusive landlord Anna Fydorovna.*Spoilers*Barbara crushes on her tutor, the impoverished student Pokrovsky, whose father is also a drunk. Pokrovsky soon dies of illness and even his dying wish to see the sun is greeted by the sight of a gloomy sky and pouring rain. Then her mother dies! Barbara flees the landlord to live across the street with Fedora. Devushkin and Barbara exchange many letters and books. Devushkin is unable to earn enough money to keep a roof over his head and is about to be on the street, when his employer gives him 100 rubles to buy new clothes. Devushkin instead sends some to Barbara. Things are also looking up for the Gorshkovs when they receive funds from a court case, then the father dies. Finally Barbara decides to marry the horrible but middle class Mr. Bykov who will take her far away.**End Spoilers**The work has been translated to English at least 8 times (under two titles 'Poor People' and 'Poor Folk'). First published in english 50 years after it was written. The edition I read is from the Modern Library dated 1917 - it doesn't list the translator however the publisher is Boni & Liveright and research finds the translator listed as C.J. Hogarth (Charles James Hogarth, Highland Light Infantry 1890, Scott's Sharpshooters in Boer War, born 7 December 1869, educated Charterhouse, died 5 April 1945.).“Before you there lie the Steppes, my darling—only the Steppes, the naked Steppes, the Steppes that are as bare as the palm of my hand. 'There' there live only heartless old women and rude peasants and drunkards. 'There' the trees have already shed their leaves. 'There' abide but rain and cold.”“I do not know what I am writing, I never do know what I am writing. I could not possibly know, for I never read over what I have written, nor correct it's orthography. At the present moment I am writing merely for the sake of writing, and to put as much as possible into this last letter of mine. . . Ah, dearest, my pet, my own darling! . . .”

About the Author

Jules Verne was born in Nantes in 1828 and died in 1905. He was much more than the father of science fiction. In his novels he described future worlds full of contraptions and situations that were unthinkable at that time, but he didn’t just imagine them, rather he prophesized what we can see today. Was Jules Verne a prophet? He always denied it, saying that he had access to groundbreaking scientific knowledge in what was 19th century France that inspired his novels. It has been thought, however, that he might have acquired privileged information because of his relationship with Masonic sects and because he belonged to a secret society along with other writers, painters and thinkers of the time. He wrote more than eighty books, many of which have been made into films over and over again: From the Earth to the Moon (1865), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1869), Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1869), Lighthouse at the End of the World, Around the World in Eighty Days, Round the Moon, are just some of his absolutely fascinating books that have made him one of the most widely read authors in the world. As Raymond Roussel put it “Verne will continue to exist when other authors of our time have long been forgotten”.

Practice your Spanish with volcanoes and dinosaurs By Nathan Walker I've been listening to audio books to practice my Spanish for a while now, and I've always found Fonolibro's CDs to have great voice acting and narration. My only complaint with this one is that it was rather short (only 2 CDs, from a 250 page book), and a lot of good episodes from the book were cut. Still, if you want a simple way to practice your Spanish and listen to a classic story in the process, this is a great place to start.

What can i say about the book? it's enthralling, daring, imaginative in its vocabulary and many things more. I'm keen of adventure books but when you add exotic landscapes to accurate data you make a masterpiece. You may think the book does not deserve its 5 stars but just read the story and tell me 'du ecrivain français'.Bye

When Marie Marvingt decided to ride the 1908 Tour de France she was told 'absolument, non!' by M. Degranges and the Societe du Tour de France. Instead she rode each stage 15 minutes after the official race had departed and finished all 4,488 kms of the parcours - a feat that only 36 of the 110 men who entered the race could equal. Her motto? "I decided to do everything better, always and forever." It's in the spirit of Breakneck Marie that this book has been written. This is not an anthology of women writing about women's cycling. Nor is it an anthology of women writing about men's bottoms in lycra, or peloton crushes or the curse of helmet hair. This is an book that celebrates the diversity of women's writing about the glorious, sometimes murky, often bizarre and frequently hilarious world of cycling in all its soapy operatic glory - from the professional sport to the club run, on the roadside and in the saddle, behind the scenes and on the massage table. Ride the Revolution represents the best new writing on cycling from women involved in the sport at all levels – as fans, key personnel, riders, photographers, journalists and presenters. These fresh and vibrant voices examine the sport from a new perspective to provide insights that rarely make it into the mainstream - what is it like to be a top women rider or work in their support team? Where is the women's sport heading and when will more women be represented at the highest level of sport's governance? And how do you get out and ride your bike when the news is full of stories of cyclists dying and you can't get clothing that fits?

A book that's almost as much fun as riding By Jrobby Ride the Revolution is an enjoyable, well-thought-out book on the entire breadth of women's cycling. Each section covers a different area of women's cycling, which ranges from new professional women in the sport to experienced athletes returning to the sport, all the way to a chef for a women's cycling team and photographers, journalists, and fans. This holistic view of the sport is not only fun but also educational. You can see the beauties of the sport and the areas in which it needs to improve (better cycling clothes for non-pro riders, better coverage of women's races, better pay for women athletes). Another highlight of the book is the way in which each story is structured. Some are interviews, some are first person narratives, and all are told in the women's diverse voices. You close the book feeling like you really know the women featured. A final note: this is not a "girly" book, it's a cycling book. So don't avoid it if you're a man. You'll enjoy the blood, sweat, and gears aspect of this book and hopefully will better understand the growing pains of the sport. All in all, one of my favorite books on cycling, and it has inspired me to support my favorite sport and get out riding my bike.

The characters and stories, many of which I had not known before reading this book, provide a good introduction into women’s cycling. From those introductions, I joined my selected social media channels to learn even more about women’s cycling in real time.
