It gave a very intimate view of sports writing back in the days before computers and insight into the author, who is obviously passionate about the sport but also about the characters he met and interviewed. He demonstrates his passion and curiosity in finding out how famous people such as Nelson Mandela and Jose Carreras conduct themselves with grace and wisdom. You get the sense that he loved this life and couldn't imagine a more pedestrian or 'ordinary' one. A page turner because he peppers the narrative with story after story that sound far fetched, but which he actually experienced in the course of his work. Definitely worth a read, especially for anyone with a knowledge of the game and characters. I enjoyed it a great deal.HelenCarngham, Australia
