To one woman, running was more than a passion - it was a lesson in perseverance. Lee DiPietro discovered the exhilaration of endurance athletics when she ran her first half marathon in her late 20s. From that day forward, she took on every marathon that she could, and, despite having to juggle her running with her responsibilities as mother and wife, she quickly established herself as one of the best runners in the United States. Over the next 30 years, Lee won race after race, running in everything from local competitions to the three most challenging endurance races: the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon, and the Ironman triathlon.
What she did not know, as she climbed the ranks of the running world, was the struggle her family would face and the role her running would play in helping her persevere in the face of great adversity. When Lee's husband was diagnosed with cancer and her son suffered a devastating accident, she found herself falling back on the lessons she had learned as a marathoner to help her endure the sudden family trials. In Against the Wind, DiPietro takes us through her harrowing yearlong fight for the lives of her husband and son. Despite the great difficulties she faced, throughout it all remained her love for running. Against the Wind is a story that will resonate with listeners whose lives have been affected by cancer as well as those who are dedicated to endurance sports. It proves that running is a tool to save lives - far from just a sport and test of one's mettle.

By Bing West Against the Wind zips along, catching you up in a drama that deepens, leaving you unsure how it will end. This is a love story written by a natural story-teller with an innate sense of pace; a gripping, inspiring book with an enduring message: don’t tell me you have it tough: just do it.The author is a world-class athlete. Her marathon times are amazing. She is the one out of ten thousand among us with that superhuman determination to persevere and achieve. We have all known or seen someone like Lee, and quietly murmured, ‘God bless their dedication, but I’m not getting up at five in the morning to run ten miles, then get the kids off to school and go to work.’ It is called, “the agony of the long-distance runner.”Then her world is shaken, when her athletic and successful husband – also called Lee – is grasped firmly by cancer. As she struggles to aid him and stand by her side, her family is again hit hard by life’s tough, unpredictable side. To describe further would take away from the book’s building drama. I wasn’t sure how the book would end, so I won’t give it away.As a combat Marine and writer in three wars, what astonished me about this book is the similarity between warriors and athletes like Lee. Both require fortitude and discipline. Both know failure. When the body or the mind breaks down, you have to rebuild, reload and try again. We Marines are always looking for a few good men. In her case, she’s a good general. She gets life’s message. Don’t complain; just live it, and try your damndest.– Bing West

Inspiration for anybody, not just another cancer book By Keiko Schneider I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2015 and started out with target therapy with chemotherapy. I continued to work full-time while managing treatments and various doctor appointments. I had very little time to be a knowledgeable cancer patient and not much time to reach out to cancer community to build support network. I managed to have my surgery before completing standard six rounds and finally got around to read cancer books while recovering from the surgery during winter break.I had bought various types of publications regarding cancer, but Lee DiPietro’s “Against the Wind” stands out from other cancer books. I found American Cancer Society’s “Breast Cancer Journey” helpful to be comprehensive and through about any stage of the “journey”. However most books were trying to lure you into alternative therapies or simply a collection of sharing experiences. While it is good to know you are not the only one going through the same, sometimes it didn’t sound very positive or giving hope and strength. Lee’s book is not only a detailed record of how her husband, a cancer patient, went through diagnosis to cure, but also it shows how two overcame the obstacles together with love and support of family. And husband’s cancer was only one of the tragedies. Her athletic achievements were sprinkled as flashback highlighting support of family and close ones are important on top of obvious physical challenge and determination. She is showing that her courage and strength to face the obstacles she earned through her athletic career helped along with family support and love. This book is an inspiration at many levels: for a caregiver of cancer patient, a patient himself/herself and anybody who aspires athletic achievement. And really for anybody as cancer and accident do not exclude anybody. It illustrates her determination; love and support of family to encourage you can do the same.

By KRRI "Now, finally I know what an Iron Woman is" sums this incredible tale of challenges and survival up perfectly. The battles that the entire DiPietro family fought are frightening in and of themselves yet the survival of each of them is a true testament to their strong love of one another. Lee's story is a beautifully written account of all that she did to help her boys - and all they did to help her - to find a happy conclusion. It is a reminder of all that love and commitment can do to help us through the most difficult times!!
