From the Author While watching my daughter's ten year old soccer team finish their game one summer day, I overheard their coach speaking to the one girl who did not get her chance to play in this game. His words have always been in my head and heart: "I'm sorry you didn't play today, but we needed to win this one."That is when I knew that despite the joy and fun of young kids playing sports, there was also something very wrong happening for some kids.Asking for and receiving the memory stories submitted for "We Had a Ball..." was an incredible experience. Nancy wishes for each young athlete to have fun, to be safe, and to know his and her value as a person.

This is not a literary masterpiece. It's backyard, kitchen table, storytelling at it's best. This is an easy read, very cool, 'take-a-break-and-read-a-story' book.75% of the stories appealed to me [especially my own]. But I actually liked best the story about a young kid losing a boxing match until someone from the crowd stepped up and coached him on what he should do. He turned around and it was Rocky Marciano, at the time the current heavyweight champion of the world. He stepped back into the ring and won the match with two punches. How cool is that.Story by story, this book is "like a box of chocolates. You never know what you are going to get."

The storiesare heart-warming and heart-wrenching, I consumed thisbook in one sitting, but each story can stand on its own.The author pays particular attention to how great coachestalk with their players. Much can be learned by listening.I certainly will be recommending this title to teachers, coaches,parents, and those who work with kids.mrslibrary

I especially loved that the stories spanned different decades and were written by varied age groups. It's fun (and informative) to read how the times have changed - and stayed the same - in youth sports. If you have ever played sports or have children who have, you will find yourself relating and reliving the highs and lows of those experiences as you read through these pages. The author clearly has her eye on the ball and I'm so glad I read this book. A keeper!
