When Christopher Madsen made the snap decision—perhaps a rash decision—to buy and renovate the 1916 yacht for which this story is named, he could scarcely have imagined the consequences that were to follow. Unexpectedly, during the course of the renovation, a window into Rowdy’s past was opened, metaphorically whisking Christopher back in time. Seduced by tantalizing clues and glimpses into the personal life of the original owner, he was steadily drawn deeper into the investigation. In 2002, ninety-three-year-old Hanny, Holland Duell’s only surviving child, came aboard her father’s boat for the first time in 83 years, and from that moment forward, the fading memories of a most amazing cast of characters were slowly and magically brought back to life. The emerging story, bringing to life the era and flair of Hemingway and Gatsby, progressively grew, becoming more and more complex and sensational—at times to the point of disbelief. The incredible life journey of Holland Duell, decorated World War I major, celebrated New York state senator, powerful patent attorney, and highly accomplished sailor, is told here from an intimately personal perspective as he is immersed in the Great War, politics at the highest level, the birth of Hollywood, fortunes and mansions, love and romance, and scandalous affairs. The epic tale, far from being a story exclusively for sailors, is a gripping, fast-paced adventure and love story, made all the more amazing by the fact that it is completely true, historically significant, and meticulously documented. A newly unearthed gem in American history, Rowdy will enjoyably transport the reader back in time to the Golden Age of Yachting—AND EVER SO MUCH MORE! ROWDY is an engrossing story of a unique racing yacht and the people who sailed her. One can almost feel the salt spray as the sails grow taut and the bow heads for deep water. 4.5 STARS

Graham Walker, March 27, 2015 For six years I had the pleasure of owning Rowdy and of racing her to many victories in the Mediterranean. Being aboard the near 100 year old yacht, one senses an atmosphere of her vintage history, and is left to ponder the details of what must have been her adventurous and romantic past. Rowdy s former owner, Christopher Madsen, has now brought that marvelous history to life in a story more colorful than imagination. Titled after the yacht, Rowdy is the epic tale of the original owner s incredible life. Encompassing sailing, the Great War, Hollywood, presidents & politics, love affairs and scandalous affairs and more Rowdy is a fascinating, true life story that all should enjoy. Graham Walker Former British America's Cup Challenge chairman and Admiral s Cup team captain
Halsey Herreshoff, June 28, 2015 ROWDY is an extraordinary presentation of monumental yacht restoration culminating in supreme racing successes of a vessel nearly a century aged.... My grandfather, Captain Nathanael Greene Herreshoff, designed and built all the signal one-design classes of the prestigious New York Yacht Club as well as yachts that defended the America's Cup for the Club six consecutive times. The Fighting Forties accomplished vigorous racing between NYYC members over many seasons starting from 1916. The ROWDY story, so well and thoroughly presented, is both instructional and inspirational.... It is a fine read! Halsey C. Herreshoff , Bristol, Rhode Island Naval Architect, America s Cup Sailor, US Navy Lieutenant, founder America s Cup Hall of Fame at the Herreshoff Marine Museum
Lynne Crowley, Larchmont Historical Society, April 3, 2015 Colonel, Senator Holland Duell and his Yacht Rowdy were a notable presence in Larchmont in the 20s and 30s. Sixteen years ago Christopher Madsen s rebuild undertaking breathed life back into the aging yacht, and now his book Rowdy brings back to life the fascinating story behind the man and the yacht. The amount of detective work that certainly went into resurrecting this story is staggering. The numerous vintage photos are stunning, and the content, which overflows with historically significant material, also delivers an exciting and most enjoyable adventure and love story set in the 20s. What a wonderful piece of history to have preserved for all to enjoy! Lynne Crowley Larchmont Historical Society
Professor David Stevenson, March 27, 2015 Rowdy provides a fascinating step back in time and into the colorful life of Holland Sackett Duell. His 1917-19 experiences in the Great War as an officer with the 306th US Army Field Artillery have been reconstructed by Madsen in remarkable detail. From training camp to battlefield, the book provides the reader with a vivid, detailed, and reflective narrative of one man s experience of the First World War. A very informative and enjoyable read. Professor David Stevenson Internationally renowned First World War Historian and author London School of Economics and Political Science
Matthew P. Murphy , Editor, WoodenBoat magazine, April 8, 2015 Rowdy is a finely crafted book about a finely built yacht. It s a narrative of war, competition, decline, and rejuvenation and at the center of it all, a sublimely beautiful boat. Matthew P. Murphy Editor, WoodenBoat magazine --EndorsementsRob Peake, Editor, Classic Boat, June 29, 2015 The 1916 Herreshoff designed sloop Rowdy is well known in the Mediterranean by way of her stellar racing career. And now Christopher Madsen, through his newly authored book, Rowdy, is sharing the fascinating history of the yacht and that of her original owner. The elegant coffee table book, abounding with vintage photographs and illustrations, brings to life one of the most glamorous eras in the history of yachting. An enriching read and a visual delight. Rob Peake Editor, Classic Boat Magazine
Ed Kane, March 2, 2015 Having been involved in the restoration of the New York Yacht Club Forty Marilee I can attest to the wonderment evoked by these glorious yachts of a bygone age. What a marvelous job Madsen, who rebuilt the sister ship Rowdy, has now done in reconstructing her history, and in sharing the incredible life journey of the original owner. Complimented by an extensive collection of illustrations and vintage photographs, Rowdy is a fascinating and uniquely personal story that should be on every sailor s (and non-sailor s) bookshelf. Ed Kane Owner of the legendary 1949 Sparkman & Stephens designed 73-foot yawl Bolero (Amazon, In a Class by Herself: The Yawl Bolero and the Passion for Craftsmanship)
Claudia Jew, The Mariners' Museum, April 25, 2015 Rowdy is brought to life in this captivating tale through the passion and obsession of Madsen. The reader easily becomes immersed in this incredible and adventurous story and is driven to keep turning the pages. Fortunately for us all, her rescuer and former owner persisted in his research which has led to the story of a 1916 racing yacht and a rich and detailed history of Holland Sackett Duell. Too few classic boats are fortunate enough to be saved and fewer have their story told as completely as Madsen has done. Christopher Madsen didn't just write about the now beautifully renovated Rowdy; he has become a part of her impressive and enduring history. Claudia Jew The Mariners' Museum, Newport News, VA
Maynard Bray, Maritime Historian, prolific author, April 13, 2015 How wonderful when a century-old pedigreed boat like Rowdy inspires not only its own restoration, but exhaustive research into its first owner, Holland Sackett Duell, his family, and their exploits. It s as much a social history of yachting and beyond as it is the story of Rowdy s restoration. And a very good read, all-round! Maynard Bray Maritime Historian, prolific author, Technical Editor, WoodenBoat, Brooklin, ME
John Rousmaniere, March 9, 2015 Rowdy wonderfully represents not only one of the liveliest periods in the history of sailing, but also the fulfillment that comes with the challenging, caring project of restoring something precious to its original state. John Rousmaniere Author, In a Class by Herself and The Annapolis Book of Seamanship
Ross Hubbard, November 1, 2003 (Survey statement on the restoration of the yacht) The level of commitment and professional accomplishment is rare and is evident in every part of the vessel truly a beautiful vessel, now restored, should be considered A NATIONAL MARITIME TREASURE. About the Author My parents were anthropologists and, as a child, I had the blessing of traveling the world with them and visiting many exotic, far-off destinations. My father, by the circumstances of his father s business, had grown up in the Philippines and for fun played in jungles and warm, tropical ocean waters. Consequently, I became infected at an early age with my father s love of the sea. We moved to Santa Barbara, CA in 1967 when I was 11 years old. The Santa Barbara Channel Islands lie twenty miles offshore. To gain passage, I bought my first boat at the age of 18. For the past 40 years those islands have been my playground, and that nautical link is what put me in the same orbit as Rowdy when she became available for purchase in 1998. What followed changed my life, as can be gleaned from reading the book Rowdy. My twin daughters were born six years later, in mid-2004, and I sold Rowdy in early 2006 to give me the freedom to spend as much time as I could with them.
After eight years of ownership, I assumed that the Rowdy project would end when I sold her, but it seems there was another seven years of work I needed to complete to satisfy the obligation I felt to share and keep alive this story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Christopher Madsen

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An amazing tale... By Charline Ratcliff, Author When I originally decided to read Rowdy, a non-fictional story about the renovation of a 1916 yacht, I don't think I realized what I was getting myself into. I do love books featuring historical ‘look-backs’ which is why I had readily acquired this book. However, upon its arrival, I was understandably stunned by the book’s massiveness and the words ''it's like a museum in a box'' flitted through my head. (Rowdy was so large that it arrived in a box – hence the reference).Viewing this book for the first time, I imagine I felt a teeny tiny sense of the same ''what have I gotten myself into" that Christopher Madsen, the book's author and Rowdy's renovator, undoubtedly felt upon realizing he now had ownership of this rather derelict 1916 yacht – a sailing vessel (that unbeknownst to him then) had an amazing story to share.Rowdy (the book) is divided into several accountings – and each one is engrossingly interesting. To say that I struggled to set this book down is an understatement. So, after Madsen's initial ‘about me’ (and his newest project) introduction, the reader will then be privy to his first phone call with Harriet Anne Duell. Harriet, who prefers to be called Hanny, is the last living child of Holland Duell – Rowdy’s original owner. Almost two years after that initial phone call, Hanny decides to pay a visit to the now renovated yacht that she hasn’t set foot on in 83 years. “Wow” is also an understatement. After meeting Madsen in person, and after scampering around the yacht as if she were once again 10, Hanny gifts Madsen with the ‘Pandora's Box’ (or the holy grail as the case may be) of previously unknown-to-him information from Rowdy's original owner – Holland’s writings during World War One (which he later published as The History of the 306th Field Artillery). This is where next section of Rowdy begins, and is labeled “The Journal.”“The Journal” allows the reader to experience a first-hand accounting of the events that transpired from May 11, 1917 through May 10, 1919. Madsen also did a remarkable job of searching out and supplementing additional facts for these two years; making this section read as if it was Holland’s personal diary/journal. It was certainly an eye-opening and riveting look at a small time period within World War One; complete with drawings, diagrams, photographs and other remembrances from these years. After the reader completes “The Journal” section, he/she will then learn about the Duell’s family history, including career choices (political and/or otherwise). Looking back almost one hundred years through time, I must say that familial ‘drama’ existed even then – it just seems we were a bit more ‘refined’ in how we dealt with it then…I really don’t want to provide any further information about this book – I don’t want to take anything away from the reader’s journey of discovery. Rowdy is certainly a wonderful read. It’s interesting, well-written and provides a consistent stream of historical facts.Lastly, if you’re a lover of reading anything nautical and/or historical then Rowdy will simply suck you in – not spitting you back out until you reach its conclusion.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Beautiful Book, a Delight to Read By Ron Fritsch Christopher Madsen’s Rowdy is a beautiful hard-cover book. I can’t imagine its lying on a coffee table without starting a delightful conversation.Rowdy is also a delight to read. Once I started it, I couldn't put it down. Madsen buys a vintage sail boat in 1998 and vows to restore it to its original 1916 condition. He spends a great deal of time and money on the project over the next several years but eventually gets the job done.He also becomes deeply interested in the boat's history. A visit from the 93-year-old daughter of the original owner, Holland Duell, leads to startling discoveries. Among other things, Duell is a descendant of the person who fired "the shot heard around the world" at Concord beginning the American Revolution. Duell himself, as the commander of an artillery battalion in the final weeks of the First World War, led the charge that punched a hole in the Germans' formerly impregnable defensive line and brought the war to an end. Many other colorful characters fill this book, from the White House of Theodore Roosevelt to the Hollywood of Lillian Gish.I'm grateful to Madsen for pulling me into Rowdy's worlds, especially those of sail boating and sail-boat racing, of early-twentieth-century high-society "blue blood" Republican New York, of Yankees in the rain and mud of France finally putting an end to the Great War in Europe, and of the early days of Hollywood and genteel producers lavishing borrowed money on the films of the actresses they fall in love with. I enjoyed it all, even at the very end the tale of the luckless but fun-loving family who sail a battered Rowdy from the east coast to the west through the Panama Canal amid rioting in the 1960s.The Association of Independent Authors gave me this book, which it received from Madsen, in return for my honest opinion as to whether Rowdy deserved the group’s Clemens Medal. I was pleased to learn that the Association of Independent Authors subsequently awarded its Clemens Medal to Rowdy.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. beautifully written, researched and illustrated read By Kevin Mc Kernan This is a big, beautifully written, researched and illustrated read. While not a boat person, I was quickly sucked into this early 20th century saga of some of the most memorable personalties of this period (think Teddy Roosevelt, Lillian Gish, Ronald Coleman, General Pershing etc.). Rowdy was an exceptionally built yacht, designed for racing and provides the nucleus around which so many human dramas orbited: their loves, failures and too many crisis to mention. I'm glad she is still plying the oceans and making new memories for its current owner, thanks to Mr Madsen's beautiful obsession.
