Though it is only about 60 pages long, I think the book really hits on the important points in his life and give the readers a great overview about this great hockey player. This is a great book for a fan to read because it covers his professional life, but it also doesn't just stop there: his youth and private life are also revealed in this book. I really enjoyed this, and there is a lot of inspiration to take away from Sidney Crosby's story too.

Highly recommend By DIANE MILLER AWESOME book, highly recommend for any hockey fan, and even to the haters out there need to read this.5 stars

The narrator spoke too fast and continually mis-pronounced names of players. You would think a book about a hockey player the narrator would know how to say EVGENI.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring By JB Lazarte Writing an unauthorized autobiography of someone famous, especially a famous athlete, could be tricky. There is so much information and so many stories and anecdotes behind that person's life that it could be challenging about which information to include. But for author Bill Redbad, who shows exceptional skills in combing through the details, his book Hyun-Jin Ryu: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Hyun-Jin Ryu has turned out to be a great read.Succinct and well-packed with information that all Hyun-Jin Ryu fans will definitely appreciate, the book tells so many of what made Hyun-Jin Ryu a respected baseball player, including his family background and what we went through growing up.With this book and with how Redban weaved his words, this is inspiring not only to sports fans but to anyone who is pursuing something they love to do and would like to read a truly remarkable life. The book offers so much in just a few pages, and that is telling of the author's brevity and control. While Hyun-Jin Ryu: The Inspirational Story of Baseball Superstar Hyun-Jin Ryu is a quick read, the inspiration and the lessons that readers will draw from it will stay with them for a long time.

Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky (sometimes spelled Dostoevsky). It was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866. It was later published in a single volume. This is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from ten years of exile in Siberia. Crime and Punishment is the first great novel of his "mature" period of writing. Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who formulates and executes a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov argues that with the pawnbroker's money he can perform good deeds to counterbalance the crime, while ridding the world of a worthless vermin. He also commits this murder to test his own hypothesis that some people are naturally capable of such things, and even have the right to do them. Several times throughout the novel, Raskolnikov justifies his actions by connecting himself mentally with Napoleon Bonaparte, believing that murder is permissible in pursuit of a higher purpose…

Constance Clara Garnett (1861 - 1946) was an English translator of nineteenth-century Russian literature. Garnett was one of the first English translators of Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov and introduced them on a wide basis to the English-speaking public. Constance Garnett translated 71 volumes of Russian literary works. Her translations received high acclaim from authors such as Joseph Conrad and D. H. Lawrence and are still being reprinted today.

Crime and Punishment (Unabridged Garnett Translation), by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Amazon.com Review Mired in poverty, the student Raskolnikov nevertheless thinks well of himself. Of his pawnbroker he takes a different view, and in deciding to do away with her he sets in motion his own tragic downfall. Dostoyevsky's penetrating novel of an intellectual whose moral compass goes haywire, and the detective who hunts him down for his terrible crime, is a stunning psychological portrait, a thriller and a profound meditation on guilt and retribution.

From Publishers Weekly Dostoyevski's classic novel of murder and guilt, featuring the conflicted killer Raskolnikov and his intellectually nimble antagonist Porfiry Petrovich, is read by the well-regarded Dick Hill. The combination should make for a must-listen audiobook, but the results are disappointingly plodding. Hill overemotes much of Dostoyevski's emotionally charged dialogue, rendering a delicate series of encounters as an array of outbursts and breakdowns. Listeners might find themselves wishing that Hill would restrain himself from the pitfalls of facile emotion in favor of a straight delivery of the inherent drama and descriptive splendor of the novel In a welcome technological twist, however, Tantor includes an e-book with this audiobook (as it does with most of its classic audiobooks), giving readers multiple options for how they might prefer to encounter Dostoyevski. (Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

From Booklist It might seem like an impossible task to cram such a heady work as Dostoevsky’s powerhouse crime novel into a graphic novel, but Mairowitz and Korkos have managed a fairly successful interpretation. They set the action in present-day Russia, which leads to some surprisingly clever allusions, but apart from that, they keep fairly close to the plot of the original, a strategy that creates some definite sticking points. Characters appear out of nowhere with little explanation of how they relate to the story, and certain minor and major details won’t make much sense to readers unfamiliar with the original. That said, the black-and-white artwork is a haunting expression of Raskolnikov’s severe inner turmoil; the stark angles, haunted visages, and heavy preponderance of black on the page captures psychological dread with an almost Hitchcockian flair. No one can expect this to match the depths of the original, but don’t think of it as a Cliffs Notes–esque alternative, either. Minor nudity, drug use, and blood splatters might make for a hard sell for classroom use. Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman

However, we have a bit of misleading marketing going on here. Make sure you're buying the version you think you're buying before you order. "Crime and Punishment" published by General Books LLC is a poor quality scanned in version. If you do the "Look Inside" thing on this book, you'll see the inside of another version of the book, NOT the one you will receive. To give you a few quotes from the publishers website: "We created your book using OCR software ..... with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos.... After we re-typeset ... your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work .... we usually remove them. .... Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. ..... We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. .....". There's no manual editing whatsover. You get the general idea. Unfortunately, books published by General Books LLC are named, seemingly intentionally, so that they have reviews associated with much better quality imprints. General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Published (google them on Wikipedia), which is flooding Amazon with poor quality reprints and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with the original or with beter quality imprints associated with them.Seems like it's Caveat Emptor on Amazon these days as Amazon certainly doesn't seem to be doing anything to protect it's customers from this Publisher.

When you look at the (paperback) edition of Crime and Punishment translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, it says right below it, "Start reading Crime and Punishment on your Kindle..." and also lists the different versions available - paperback, hardcover, etc. - and includes a Kindle Edition. But when you click on either, you get this, which is a completely different translation. Pevear and Volokhonsky have been widely praised, their translations now considered far and away the best English versions available of various classic works of Russian Literature. But Amazon lumps everything with the same title as if it were the same product. Some of the customer-uploaded images of the book's cover even say that it is the Pevear and Volokhonsky version, but it is not. It's a 1914 translation by Constance Garnett. This is the reason people started to hate big box and online bookstores when they first started putting neighborhood bookstores out of business -- because they don't seem to care about books, just making money. But what's funny here is that they could actually charge money for the better translation, since it's new, but instead they choose to give away an inferior version and pretend it's the same thing. (They do offer the Pevear and Volokhonsky version of Demons for a price - a version easier to distinguish because the newer translation even changes the title from the less-accurate The Possessed - versions with that title are available for free.) Also, because they don't distinguish between different translations, there is no button available under the Pevear and Volokhonsky version to request that the publisher make it available for Kindle. It's also difficult to know what version of a book is being reviewed sometimes. I'll be reading reviews on the Kindle Edition page, and the reviewer will describe the fine leather binding. This is especially frustrating now that I realize the actual content - the language - of the book I'm buying could be different from the one I read about online.Since getting my Kindle, I've been impressed by the machine itself, but thoroughly unimpressed by Amazon's handling of content. They should focus less exclusively on getting people to buy the device, and work harder at improving the way they sell books and other content for it.

361 of 388 people found the following review helpful. A Classic for a Reason By Paul McGrath I initially approached this book with a great deal of trepidation. I had never read Dostoyevsky, and was concerned that I would get bogged down in some lengthy, mind-numbingly boring, nineteenth-century treatise on the bestial nature of man or something. I am happy to report this is not the case. Instead, and to my delight, it is a smoothly flowing and fascinating story of a young man who succumbs to the most base desire, and the impact this has both psychologically and otherwise on himself and those around him.To be sure, the book seems wordy in places, but I suspect this has to do with the translation. And what translator in his right mind would be bold enough to edit the great Dostoyevsky? But this is a very minor problem. What we get with Dostoyevsky is dramatic tension, detailed and believable human characters, and brilliant insight into human nature. Early in the novel our hero meets and has a lengthy conversation with Marmeladov, a drunkard. This conversation is never uninteresting and ultimately becomes pathetic and heartbreaking, but I kept wondering why so much time was spent on it. As I got deeper into the book, I understood why this conversation was so important, and realized that I was in the hands of a master storyteller. This is also indicative of the way in which the story reveals itself. Nothing is hurried. These people speak the way we actually speak to one another in real life, and more importantly, Dostoyevsky is able to flesh out his characters into whole, three-dimensional human beings. And what a diverse group of characters! Each is fleshed out, each is marvelously complex. Razujmikhin, the talkative, gregarious, good-hearted, insecure and destitute student; Sonia, the tragic child-prostitute, with a sense of rightness in the world; Petrovich, the self-important, self-made man, completely out of touch with his own humanity; Dunia, the honorable, wronged sister: we feel like we know these people because we've met people like them. They fit within our understanding of the way human beings are.Dostoyevsky also displays great insight into human nature. Svidrigailov, for example, talks of his wife as liking to be offended. "We all like to be offended," he says, "but she in particular loved to be offended." It suddenly struck me how true this is. It gives us a chance to act indignantly, to lash out at our enemies, to gain favor with our allies. I don't believe I've ever seen this thought expressed in literature before. In fact, it never occurred to me in real life!Petrovich, Dunia's suitor, not only expects to be loved, but because of his money, and her destitution, he expects to be adored! To be worshipped! He intentionally sought out a woman from whome he expected to get this, and is comletely flummoxed when she rejects him. His is an unusual character, but completely realized. There is so much more to talk about: the character of Raskolnikov, which is meticulously and carefully revealed; the sense of isolation which descends on him after committing his crime; the cat and mouse game played on him by the police detective. I could go on and on. I haven't even mentioned the historical and social context in which this takes place. Suffice to say this is a very rich book.Do not expect it to be a rip-roaring page turner. Sit down, relax, take your time, and savor it. It will be a very rewarding experience. And thank you SL, for recommending it.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. 4 Stars !! By Jennifer H. ~ Book B!tches Blog This is my first Rose Sawyer book and I enjoyed it quite a bit. What drew me to this book and author was the cover of the book and the blurb. I can't help but be sucked into a book that is about a MMA fighter.I thought this book was well written and I will for sure read other books by this author. Her writing style was good and one I could sink myself into. I found the characters and storyline interesting enough to hold my attention all the way through. The only thing I would've liked better, would've been getting more of their past story in real time. What I mean by that is that we learn about Noah and Caitlyn's background through snippets and flashbacks. I kind would've liked having that told in real time and then if need be have a 2 year time jump. I felt by writing this way we were missing some key facts of their friendship. With that said I still liked this book and I think that everyone should meet Noah James. He is definitely drool worthy ;)What I really enjoyed about this book was that it was different then the other MMA books out there. I can't explain what I mean, except that it just felt unique to me. Now don't get me wrong we had the normal aspects of a good MMA story, but the author added some elements of mystery and suspense to this story making it it's own.In this book we meet Caitlyn and Noah. Noah is a broken soul, who gets sucked into the darkness of his past and the only release he has from it is when he is fighting in the ring. That is until he meets Caitlyn. I will say we do learn a lot more about Noah's past then we did about Caitlyn's. Caitlyn's past is touched on, but I thought there could've been more about it in the book. I will warn you that this book is pretty much an insta-love scenario. Yes the characters have been friends for over 2 years but since we don't get that build up, it felt a little rushed to be exchanging I Love You's by 10% into the story. So if you aren't a fan of that, you might want to steer clear of this book. I personally still enjoyed the story and thought it was well worth the read!!If you are looking for a good MMA fighter love story then I think you should give this book a try. It is a stand alone and a complete story. Although I am hoping that maybe Ben would get his own book in the future ;)

Beautiful and Heartwarming By Deb ~ The Club I really enjoyed this new release by Rose Sawyer!Noah is automatically likable and without even knowing him or anything about him, I found myself in his corner! Noah's past is dark. But right at this very second in the opening of the book, his light is shining bright and at the end of that is the future he is looking to have with Caitlyn. When Noah is falsely accused of failing his drug test before his prize fight, the dark starts to set in for him again.Even though Noah has had a past that included drugs he has been clean for a very long time.He no longer believes in happiness and it seems as though every time things start to take a turn for the better, it get's snatched away from him.He knows he's being set up and he sets out to prove it.Noah is damaged, but Caitlyn see's the good in him, she is also as in love with him as he is her. Caitlyn has been hurt in the past and she has low self esteem due to that hurt but Noah makes her see that she is beautiful and worthy love.As the story continues Noah and Caitlyn build each other up and prove that no matter what life throws at them they can work it out as long as they do it together. This book was a wonderful and refreshing read. The author, Bill Redban, follows the life of Madison Bumgarner from childhood to last year’s World Series win. While there are quite a few statistics, the author also ruminates on the legacy and potential of Madison Bumgarner and slightly delves into his personal life. This book would definitely appeal to San Francisco Giants fans as well as those who are fans of pitchers and their legacies.

This book is devoted to a whole series of useful firearms, beginning with the well-known .22 Long Rifle. The venerable “twenty-two” hosts a wide array of interesting loads, including some ultra-quiet choices and fairly nasty high-speed rounds. Even hotter rimfire calibers include the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, plus three small-bore derivatives: the .17 Mach II, .17 Hornady Rimfire Magnum, and Winchester’s high velocity .17 Super Magnum. Careful shopping can provide us with a useful rimfire (or maybe even two) with which to quietly harvest small game or eliminate pests. An economical .22 LR firearm can also serve as a great high-powered rifle trainer if similar function is considered. In a pinch, it might even work for self-defense. The rimfires can’t do everything, but they can do a lot once fully understood. One trait is easy to overlook until you start shooting. They’re lots of fun! This book will lead the way from beginning to end.

Muhammad Ali burst onto the boxing scene over half a century ago, dominating the sport throughout the sixties and seventies. Yet, his effect on the sport is still prevalent. He evolved into a true pop culture icon whose image remains everywhere. Labeled the “Louisville Lip” by the press, the then Cassius Clay carved up opponents with his quick wit and sharp tongue as easily and thoroughly as with his rapid, razor-sharp punching. Throughout his career, Ali’s highly animated rhyming recitations delivering accurate pre-fight prognostications were as anticipated as his performances in the ring. Ali was the “Poet Laureate of Pugilism.” It is in that spirit that author David A. Bates has created “ODES ON ALI” (‘A Tribute To ‘The Greatest’) covering Ali’s professional boxing career from his pro debut to the fight in which he captured the heavyweight title for the third and final time. Each fight is recalled in a lyrically rhyming poetry style reminiscent of Ali’s own rhyming recitations. A concise biographical portrayal that is an informatively accurate, highly entertaining, read, “ODES ON ALI” was created to be a wonderful walk down memory lane for Ali fans old and new as well as those who might still wonder what all the fuss was about.

By Eishinas Paying homage and showing adoration much beyond mere words can describe, author & poet David A, Bates brings out his admiration of life time through his collection of sports poetry 'Odes on Ali: A Tribute to the Greatest' for the worlds most renowned boxer 'Muhammad Ali'Ali's shocking victory over George Foreman on a live closed circuit broadcast turned out to be the very initial inspiration for the author, compelling him to put on pages his very passionate love for the heavy weight champion.'Odes on Ali' is definitely an amazing book with a unique poetic and artistic style of narration used by author and poet David depicting the very start of the career of Muhammad Ali till the very hard earned retirement, painting vivid pictures of his action in the ring and out in life.It was from this enriching and engrossing master piece I learned, that there was much more to discover and pay gratitude to the amazing personality of Muhammad Ali other than just being a celebrity public figure which changed my perspective towards the sport of boxing and the boxer giving it an intense outlook. This book is one of its kind which surely deserves to be widely read and enjoyed by all and esp. sports lovers and those with interest in poems with depth. Highly recommended!

Reminded me of the Greatest's fights By Amazon Customer I don't usually read sports books but when I saw this being offered by Booktasters for free in return for an honest review on Twitter I had to get it. I remember watching (actually I was more interested in listening to he and Howard Cosell) Ali with my dad and sisters. You can tell that David A. Bates has a passion for documenting this tribute to Ali. I enjoyed the introduction which helped explain how the book was going to be formatted but also gave more of the The Greatest's history outside the ring. As I read these odes I was taken back to that time around the TV, listening to Ali as he talked about his fights and when he stepped on the ring waiting to see if his predictions would come true.I enjoyed this book and even if you aren't interested in sports consider reading this book.

Review by Jack Magnus for Readers' Favorite By Amazon Customer Reviewed by Jack Magnus for Readers' FavoriteOdes on Ali: A Tribute to the Greatest is a collection of sports poetry written by David A. Bates. Bates introduces his work with an autobiographical account of his personal recollections of Ali's bouts as well as what he calls Ali's "pre-fight antics", and shows why Ali should be considered in many ways , the first of the rappers. He also discusses ali's conversion to Islam and the efforts made by the draft board to induct him into the military despite his refusal to do so based upon his religious beliefs. after this introduction, Bates presents his collection of odes which cover every one of Ali's bouts in chronological order. Each poem is composed of four-line stanzas with the second and fourth lines having rhyming ends. The final poem sums up Ali's career and subsequent public service.David A. Bates' collection of sports poetry, Odes on Ali: A Tribute to the Greatest, may be viewed with some initial skepticism by those readers who love sports writing, but I'm hoping they can suspend their disbelief just long enough to read Bates' brilliant introduction and one single poem. I'm convinced that one poem will render them incapable of not continuing to read this most amazing recreation of Ali's career as if they had been rendered powerless by a tap from the legendary champ himself. These poems kept me spellbound as I followed Ali's progress from those initial bouts to winning and regaining his hard-earned title and through his retirement. There's drama, action and suspense in every lie as Bates' careful choices of words and rigorous adherence to the structure of his poems give each line power and real, you-are-there authenticity.I had a marvelous time reading Odes on Ali and literally could not stop smiling the whole way through. While I was familiar with many of Ali's major bouts, there was still so much to learn, so many bouts that I hadn't known about. These poems put the reader right there in the ring, watching the action as closely as if they were in front row seats. Yes, I was a bit skeptical when I saw the format of this work, but that introduction and first poem had me hooked, and I'm so glad they did. Odes on Ali: A Tribute to the Greatest is an original and most impressive book of sports writing and an outstanding collection of poetry all at once. It's most highly recommended.

East Face is the true story of my solo winter ascent of the East Face of Basin Mountain in California’s Sierra Nevada mountain range. The East Face is a maze of uncharted and steep climbing routes. Rock spires and towering walls of granite emerge from the face. Gullies filled with snow and ice cut deep wrinkles into the rock. One of these wrinkles became my route to the summit. I ascended alone through a gauntlet of loose rock bands, snow slopes, and vertical ice.As I climbed up I found myself in a struggle greater than the physical effort needed to pull my body through this dangerous landscape. My conflicting fears of success, failure, life, and death battled inside me. But these fears did not dissuade me from climbing higher to find the hidden paradise beyond this granite gateway.A paradise where my body and soul would be free to soar among the summits.

It is a good read, giving some real insight to both the fear and the exhilaration of climbing uncharted territory, never quite knowing if the climb will be aborted or successful. The outcome is basically determined ONE STEP at a time. You won't stop reading until you finish it.

Many of the fairy tales and nursery rhymes you know are wrong. We had to research dusty libraries, read the memoirs of ancient nannies, and threaten the younger Grimm Brother with a Kimura lock to bring you the original, unaltered, martial arts-based stories. See such classics as: "The Coach Who Cried Kyongo!", "Goldilocks and the Three Kicking Distances", "Red Riding Hood and the Value of Deception", "The Three Little Pigs and Stances", "The Triangle Chokie Song", and many more!

By Jim Mather I have been involved in and taught the martial arts for almost 60 years and have an M.A. degree from Stanford in Education. I found Mr. Pottle's stories a very creative and effective twist on our children's classics. Not only were his stories and rhymes entertaining but they each contained a important message for young people in general but further enhanced by their relevance to young students of the martial arts. His use of a brick to explain the differences between various stances was masterful. I immediately brought an old red brick I had in my backyard to my school so I could use it to explain the same to my young (and old) students. Great job!

It contains several classic fairy tale stories with a twist to teach lessons about martial arts. There are also some traditional nursery rhymes that have been modified to meet the martial arts and Taekwondo themes. I really did enjoy reading the stories and I'm looking forward to reading the book to my kids for bedtime.

In November 1938 on The Night of the Broken Glass, the Jewish people of Germany are terrified as Hitler's men shatter their store windows, steal and destroy their belongings, and arrest many Jewish fathers and brothers. Parents fear for their own lives but their focus is on protecting their children. When England arranges to take the children out of Germany by train, the Kindertransport is organized and parents scramble to get places on the trains for their young family members, worried about what the future will hold. Soon, trains filled with Jewish children escaping the Nazis chug over the border into Holland, where they are ferried across the English Channel to England and to freedom. But for Peter, the shy violin player, his sister Becca, and his friends Stephen and Hans, life in England holds challenges as well. Peter’s friend Eva, who did not get a seat on the Kindertransport, is left to the evil plans of Hitler. Peter, working his musician’s hands raw at a farm in Coventry, wonders if they should have stayed and fought back instead of escaping. When the Coventry farm is bombed and Nazis have reached England, Peter feels he has nothing left. He decides it’s time to stand and fight Hitler. Peter returns to Germany to join the Jewish underground resistance, search for the mother and sister he left behind in Berlin, and rescue his childhood friend Eva.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and he didn't like Jews, not even the small ones By Peggy Geiger Genre: Historical Fiction>WW II eraExcerpt from the book:"Peter Weinberg, with the gray, piercing eyes, was eleven when he had to face the truth that the world was filled with evil, and there was nothing he could do about it. The Nazi monster, Adolph Hitler, had risen to power in Germany, and he didn't like Jews, not even the small ones."The Nazi regime began closing in on the Jewish world slowly at first. They were no longer allowed in the parks, then they were banned from the swimming pools. Their safe, secure world began to turn upside down. Signs in retail stores said, "Do Not Sell Anything to Jews". By measured, deliberate increments, the violence and exclusion continued.Peter's father was a WW I decorated hero. He had fought alongside Hitler and his Nazi thugs as patriots, brothers in arms, only a few years before. Peter cannot understand why he is now considered less than human and hated, just for being Jewish. The confusion over the concept of hatred turns to dread. Synagogues and books are burned. Leaving Germany now requires permission, paperwork and money. Any control over their lives begins to slip away along with all human rights. Children are called "rats" as they are rudely escorted out of school and told not to come back. The Night of the Broken Glass destroys shops, businesses and the means of making a living. The targeting escalates. Homes are destroyed or commandeered by non-Jewish Germans.Being Jewish is now approximates a death sentence. Devastation morphs into unspeakable, unrelenting horror. Jews are beaten, arrested and killed. Or they just disappear in the night. Unknown to the Jewish population, it has only just begun.I have read many stories about WW II, however, I had never heard of The Children's Train or Kindertransport. After The Night of Broken Glass, England organized a a program offering safe haven to Jewish children up to the age of 17. The children traveled by train to Holland and were then ferried to England. Ten thousand children were saved. Kindertransport continued until Holland was invaded and Germany closed its border. This is a story of the parental heartbreak of sending terrified children away to save them and also the story of the children who did not get a seat on a train. The concentration camps received the children who missed the train.Peter was eleven, his sister Becca was six, when they arrived in England. Their father was dead by this time and their mother could not bear to part with baby Lily. She kept Lily with her in Germany. All was not good for the children who survived the Nazi reign of terror. After arriving in England, Peter and Becca were separated. Peter was selected by a cruel farmer and his wife as a free farmhand. He was worked to the point of exhaustion daily. Becca was selected by a family that treated her well. Most of the rescued children never saw their parents again and were subjected to the numerous Blitz bombings in England. The story follows Peter as he eventually joins the Jewish resistance to wreak havoc with the Nazi war effort.I highly recommend this novel, it should be required reading for middle and high school students so this history can never be repeated.ARC courtesy of the author and publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a fair review.View all my reviews

No one stopped me, I just couldn’t do it; it was just too heavy, too much. A lot of this book had me feeling the same way, simply difficult to get through, though there were a lot more humorous moments than I expected, ending with the protagonist getting the nickname “Violin Commando!”The reason I did get through this book was because it was about the Kindertransport, which was a British program to get Jewish kids out of Nazi Germany. In college I wrote a paper about the different ways people escaped, including this, and I went to a play about it a couple of years ago. But surprisingly there isn’t all that much about it here, and a lot of this story takes place back in Germany and Poland after the kids have moved on to England. In addition to that, life for the kids in Britain isn’t all that great either, though of course not nearly as bad as if they hadn’t left. One more personal note: there’s a throwaway line where a character says, “Sometimes I wish the Jews weren’t always the ones chosen to suffer.” Back in college a poly-sci prof told a story about an Israeli student who started an oral report with, “The Jews are God’s chosen people. . .” and there was a pause while the professor hid, then the guy added, “chosen to suffer.”About halfway through I looked at the author’s website, where besides her impressive credentials I saw that this book is geared toward kids, or at least teens, which changed my perspective on the writing; I found myself more forgiving after that. The only problem I had with the plotting was the occurrence of too many coincidences, especially Peter when he infiltrates Germany and Poland and runs into so many people he knew before he left. In a book that makes you check your emotions at the door if you have any hope of reading through it, this is the most heartbreaking passage: knowing they’re about to die, a child tells his mother, “I’m glad I didn’t go on that train. Then you would have died alone.”

The Kindertransport did exist, it was a rescue train in Germany during world war two. It carried children from Germany to Holland and then they took a ferry to England. The train saved many Jewish children's lives. This book tells the fictional story of brother and sister Peter and Becca also their friends Stephen and Hans. It is a carefully written book which does not embellish the drastic situation and was a good read.
